About this Role
The Institute’s staff engage regularly with a wide range of governments, stakeholders, and rights holders involved in and affected by climate change policy across the country. Our tailored, inclusive approach to engagement is central to the Institute’s success. Engagement informs and grounds our research, enables constructive dialogue about climate progress and priorities, and helps expand support for durable, evidence-based policy solutions.
This role offers the opportunity to deepen your understanding of key issues and players influencing Canadian and international climate and energy policy, and to grow your professional network and profile. You will work closely with colleagues across the Institute to build and execute engagement plans from the ground up, and directly contribute to the Institute’s impact on strategic priorities.
The Engagement Assistant will join a small, high-performing team that manages and executes engagement activities across the Institute’s research programs. This position is responsible for coordinating, tracking and reporting on the full spectrum of government relations and engagement activities underway at the Institute.
The successful candidate will work with the Director of Engagement to lead and maintain engagement tracking processes, metrics, and milestones, providing regular reporting to senior management. They will manage projects and coordinate specific engagement initiatives, including designing and facilitating engagement meetings and events, and building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders.
We are looking for a detail-oriented, tech-savvy, energetic, responsible, and adaptable professional who is experienced in handling a wide range of administrative responsibilities, data and information management, and program and event support tasks with confidence and superior organizational and project management skills. The ideal candidate is a natural team player and self-starter who communicates frequently, openly, and directly and knows how to proactively identify and communicate any support they need to deliver on their responsibilities.
Essential Qualifications and Skills
- Informed about Canadian current events and key players related to climate, energy and resource policy
- Demonstrated competencies in applying justice and equity principles to engagement strategies and practices
- Lived or professional experience leading or contributing to the development and implementation of engagement strategies with a mix of: governments, industry, academia, Indigenous peoples, youth, civil society, and/or equity-seeking communities
- Undaunted by routine, detail-oriented administrative engagement tasks including list-building, CRM database management, engagement tracking and reporting, and coordinating meetings with stakeholders
- Experience working with various CRM systems, such as HubSpot, Salesforce, NationBuilder etc., including managing contact records, generating lists and reports, and improving back-end system design or functionality
- Agile, outcomes-driven project management skills and a proven ability to stickhandle complex deliverables and juggle competing priorities
- Up to 5 years experience in stakeholder engagement and government relations, preferably in fields related to climate, environment or energy policy or research
- Familiarity with lobbying legislation and reporting requirements in various Canadian jurisdictions, especially at the federal level
Our ideal candidate will also be:
- Building a network of key contacts within Canadian government, industry and civil society organizations in fields related to energy, climate, and environmental policy
- Capable of representing the Institute in a variety of external settings, including at Institute events and other settings involving senior-level stakeholders and government representatives
- A polished and sensitive communicator with excellent writing, verbal, and interpersonal skills
- Highly organized and energized by tasks that require systemic thinking and excellent attention to detail
- Well-versed in current affairs, engagement practices and policy considerations that advance Indigenous rights, knowledge, research methods, decolonization, and reconciliation
- At ease working in both French and English
- Adept at applying current best practices in facilitation, convening, and multi-stakeholder engagement within a policy research context
