Job Description
IO’s Transaction Services and Corporate Legal Enterprise Team provides professional support to all parts of the agency. Lawyers within the team specialize in services that support infrastructure and commercial projects, construction, real estate and leasing, lending, privacy protection, government affairs, litigation, and contract management.


As part of Infrastructure Ontario’s Transaction Legal team, you will have an opportunity to play a leading role in Ontario’s most important and complex projects, including major infrastructure projects and other government initiatives leveraging private sector partnerships.


What You Will Do


  • Oversee and direct external counsel; interpret and disseminate legal advice and recommendations to senior lawyers and senior management
  • Oversee the provision of legal support on a portfolio of projects.
  • Provide high-quality and commercially-minded legal advice and service to internal clients and senior management on matters related to the planning, procurement, construction and operations of major provincial infrastructure projects
  • Provide advice and guide project lawyers in structuring and implementing major infrastructure projects. This will often require innovative thinking to develop and negotiate agreements reflecting the needs of each project.
  • Ensure compliance with Infrastructure Ontario’s governance requirements.
  • Assume other legal and management duties as assigned
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with project partners, funding partners, industry players and other stakeholders
  • Be accountable for a team of lawyers in their carriage of files and issue management, and responsible for managing the team’s performance. Give direction to Transaction Legal team members and support their development through coaching and mentoring
  • Educate legal team and internal clients on legal matters through discussions and presentations
  • Represent Infrastructure Ontario in relations with representatives of the government, public- and private-sector stakeholders, the media and the general public
  • Support the Transaction Legal Vice Presidents on corporate-wide initiatives and other general matters
  • Draft, review, analyze and negotiate complex agreements, opinions, memoranda, and procurement documents to manage risk and ensure that the government’s objectives are achieved


Who We're Looking For


  • O Proven management and leadership skills and abilities
  • The individual must have a university degree in law (LLB or JD) and membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
  • O Experience with P3 or other project finance transactions is required
  • O Ability to work collaboratively in a large team-based environment of a growing organization
  • O Excellent communication, negotiation and relationship-building skills, including the ability to communicate complex legal issues in a way that can be understood by both lawyers and non-legal clients.
  • O Demonstrated ability to identify areas of change and initiate, drive and see through such change to completion.
  • O Experience acting for clients (in either the public or private sector) on large and/or complex transactions is desired
  • O The ability to thrive in a fast paced, high pressure and multi-task environment with changing priorities.
  • We are seeking an individual with a minimum of six (6) years of experience practicing law or similar related experience in the area(s) of infrastructure, construction, project finance, corporate/commercial and/or commercial real estate
  • O Experience in infrastructure using non-P3 delivery models, construction, dispute resolution, commercial real estate, and/or other commercial contracts is desired.

The salary range for this position is $129,100 to $193,700 with a corresponding job level of L3.
