Job Description


We are looking for a Director, HR Strategic Initiatives


Canada Life is looking for a strategic, dynamic, and results-driven HR professional to join our HR Strategy & Programs team in the role of Director, HR Strategic Initiatives. Reporting to the AVP, HR Strategy, this role works closely with the HR leadership team and other stakeholders to lead the planning and implementation of strategic HR initiatives, including HR technology initiatives, HR integration work as part of acquisitions, new HR program rollouts, and more.


The Director, HR Strategic Initiatives is a strong individual contributor, and leads cross-functional project teams with team members from our HR Centres of Expertise (CoEs), HR Operations, HR Business Relations, Corporate Technology, and others. They support the AVP and HR senior leadership team in managing the overall HR initiatives portfolio, in annual business planning, and in the definition of longer-term priorities.


What You Will Do


Lead HR planning and delivery for strategic HR initiatives:


  • Lead monthly HR initiatives portfolio reporting process
  • Ensure alignment among project stakeholders
  • Lead the development of project charters, project plans, and other project deliverables
  • Collaborate with HR leaders to define HR priorities and projects
  • Lead risk assessment and mitigation activities
  • Define initiative governance, and assist with project oversight
  • Identify opportunities to improve work, identify better ways of completing deliverables
  • Leads project delivery for multiple HR initiatives, commitments and priorities


Lead change management activities:


  • Support the ongoing execution of change management activities for the HR portfolio
  • Provide counsel and support to project teams and HR leaders to help build support for projects
  • Collaborate with project teams and key partners (L&D, Comms) to define change plans


Lead business analysis and process design activities:


  • Provide counsel and support to HR leaders to define effective HR business processes
  • Lead stakeholder workshops to review and validate business process designs
  • Lead cross-functional teams to design, validate, and sign off on business processes
  • Lead the development of business cases – financial and qualitative


Bring external perspectives:


  • Keep abreast of emerging HR trends, technologies and innovations in the external market


What You Will Bring


  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business, or other relevant field
  • Comfortable presenting and leading discussions at all levels of the organization
  • Project delivery experience
  • Minimum 5-10 years experience in HR project delivery role or human capital consulting, with diverse experiences in Human Resources, HR technology, process improvement, project management, and change management
  • Experience with HR workstreams in mergers and acquisitions
  • Knowledge of current market practices and trends in HR operating models and technology
  • Proven ability to translate ambiguity and complexity into simple plans and presentations
  • Strong business and financial acumen
  • Expert in Office365 and project management tools (e.g., MS Project, SmartSheet)
