The Director, Communications plays an important role in elevating and protecting the destination brand, creating clarity for the team and members through strong strategic and tactical plans to support the organization’s priorities while reinforcing its position as a global leader in sustainable tourism. Reporting to the VP, Destination Development, the Director, Communications is responsible for creating and leading the execution of the annual corporate planning cycle, and all related documents including the strategic plan, annual business plan, annual report, monthly management reports, and board documents, and others as required.


A natural collaborator, they will partner with their internal and external peers (Town of Banff, Parks Canada, ID9 Council and Members) to maximize engagement, progress, and destination alignment supporting the Lead Tourism for Good 10-Year Vision for Tourism in Banff and Lake Louise through clear plans, narratives, messaging, and the creation of a meaningful cadence of opportunities to further the plan’s awareness, acceptance and mobilization internally and in the destination.


The Director, Communications will also be accountable for the creation of clear strategic plans related to destination alignment and member enablement and will oversee the execution of member communications to maximize engagement and advance the organizations’ business plans.


Champion thought leadership opportunities to support internal, destination-wide, and global advocates to drive further awareness for Banff and Lake Louise Tourism, its members, and its significant contributions to the tourism ecosystem in Alberta and Canada.


The Director will inform and oversee the preparation of BLLT media pitches, key messages, presentations, and speeches to support the senior leadership team in raising the profile of the organizations.


The Director Will Be a Builder And Defender Of Banff & Lake Louise Tourism, And The Destination, And Will Oversee The Creation And Execution Of Communications Strategy And Tactical Plans And Messaging That Support And Elevate Organizational Capacity In


  • Development of the 10-Year Vision Momentum plan and execution.
  • BLLT Brand and Executive Communications
  • Member Engagement and Activation: including the creation and oversight of the member engagement strategy, plans, narratives, and their execution.
  • Destination Alignment
  • Communications planning supporting cross-functional priorities, including the launch of the member portal, the organization’s shift to values-based marketing, and other opportunities as they emerge.
  • Crisis and Issues Management
  • Advocacy communications: consults with senior leadership on position and works with the Director, Experience Development to stay abreast of policy issues and opportunities to create strategic plans and messaging that bolster BLLT’s position, advancing destination alignment to ensure the tourism perspective, and voice of the visitor are considered in policy discussion at all levels of government.


The ideal applicant will have the following qualifications and experience:


  • Proven ability to develop, articulate and gain support for organizational priorities and strategies.
  • A degree/diploma in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing or related field with a minimum 9 years of experience.
  • Membership in IABC and CPRS considered an asset.
  • Strong research and analytical skills in developing and interpreting reports.
  • Strong interpersonal and community relations skills.
  • Strong people leadership, organizational, interpersonal, and consultative skills.
  • Must be innovative and adaptable, able to provide solutions and advice to others.
  • Bilingualism considered an asset.
  • Superior writing and message development skills for various media and multiple stakeholders (internal and external).
  • Knowledge of the tourism industry considered an asset.
  • Candidate must have a proven track record of working under pressure in complex situations.
  • Experience developing and implementing communications plans with key metrics for measuring success.
  • Technically proficient and comfortable with using or learning a variety of computer applications.
