Position Summary:


Reporting to the Clinical Director, the primary role of the Clinical Educator is to support the delivery of quality patient care and excellence in professional and clinical nursing practice. This position will support post-acute programs, including the Integrated Stroke Unit, Rehabilitation, Palliative Care, Medically Complex, and the Willett site.


Primary Responsibilities:


  • Continually upgrades expertise by attending seminars, workshops, conferences, community committee meetings and educational courses.
  • Assists in the development of patient teaching programs.
  • Remains up to date with nursing best practice guidelines and best practices related to the program
  • Assists with policy and procedure development/revisions when standards of care change to facilitate evidence-based practice.
  • Elevates the profile of nursing and establishes a communication strategy for nursing to inform all stakeholders of related nursing activities
  • Provides nursing in-service and continuing education.
  • Conducts education needs assessments for targeted education strategies and programs.
  • Assists in the prioritization of the learning needs of Unit staff
  • Recommendations on professional practice, education and research, quality improvement, professional advocacy, professional standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Plans to implement and evaluate specific educational programs to meet the identified nursing needs.
  • Collaborates with Leadership regarding skills assessment as support to Development Plans
  • Ensures that regulatory changes, issues and initiatives that impact professional nursing practice are identified, discussed and directed appropriately for follow-up through the program


Mandatory Qualifications:


  • Solid knowledge base related to adult learning principles.
  • Expert critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to lifelong professional development
  • Formal leadership education is an asset
  • Formal teaching experience with adult learners is an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, implement and evaluate programs to meet nursing staff's educational and professional needs
  • Previous experience as a Nurse Clinician or Nurse Educator is strongly preferred
  • At least five years of clinical nursing experience in an acute care setting.
  • Registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing
  • Ability to contract learning experiences with nurses and develop learning objectives
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certificate
  • Master's Degree in Education or Nursing required.
  • Demonstrated leadership, teaching, facilitation and presentation skills


Safety:


  • Comply with all BCHS Risk Management Patient Safety and Occupational Health and Safety programs, policies and processes to eliminate or minimize unsafe acts or conditions, including identification and reporting of near misses and actual events.
  • Use and maintain safety devices and personal protective equipment correctly, including hand washing.
  • Understanding of emergency response plans and comply with the procedures outlined for each type of emergency.
