Course Description – HSCI 351 – Contact Lenses 3

This course examines advanced design and fitting solutions for hard and soft contact lenses. This includes specialty lens fitting considerations and modifications and out of the ordinary ocular conditions, as well as soft lens materials, wearing schedules, modalities, and indicators for contact lens wear.

Note: This position is to be filled as soon as possible.

The Role

• Be an active and engaged member of the School to maintain a “team environment”
• Provide feedback for continuous program improvement
• Maintain and update curriculum and course outlines as required
• Evaluate student progress through assignments, exams and quizzes
• All other duties as required for the position
• Facilitate student achievement and professionalism through mentorship and coaching
• Remain current and maintain contact with industry sectors to assure technology is relevant
• Prepare and deliver lectures to students enrolled in the Optician Diploma program
• Participate in all SAIT training, School and program meetings
• Promote and support SAIT and the School of Health and Public Safety's mission, strategic and academic plans

Qualifications

• Must be:

Job Classification: Instructor

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to thrive in a team environment are required
• Highly proficient with Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word and PowerPoint
• Comfortable speaking in public
• Refraction experience and prescribing is an asset
• Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
• Previous academic background (including teaching experience) is an asset as are additional educational qualifications
• Knowledgeable about myopia control and scleral lenses
• A high degree of flexibility and adaptability to unexpected and changing conditions
• Positive & respectful attitude
• Minimum of five years of progressive and diverse hands-on clinical experience in the optical industry and contact lenses fitting
• Proficient with technology to facilitate delivery of classroom content through the Learning Management System (Brightspace)
• Involvement in scholarly activity/research is an asset
• Experienced with advanced fitting techniques for soft and gas permeable contact lenses (Contact Lens Practitioner RCLP or Optometry license are considered an asset)
