Features and Front of Book Editor

Broadview — Canada’s best special interest magazine — is looking for a part-time (three days; 21 hours per week) Features and Front-of-Book Editor to manage two vital sections of our print magazine.

We’re looking for someone with enthusiasm for telling stories about social justice, ethical living and spirituality (from a progressive Christian perspective). The ideal candidate has lots of great ideas and keen instincts for what resonates with Broadview’s readers. You have exceptional interpersonal and communication skills and can thrive within a team. You are an independent problem solver who is excited by the opportunity to make a big difference for a small organization and to help Broadview continue to deliver high-quality journalism.

Broadview is the oldest continuously published magazine in North America, with roots dating back to 1829. In both 2021 and 2022, Broadview won Best Magazine: Special Interest from the National Magazine Awards. The flagship print magazine is published eight times per year and delivered to 22,000 paying subscribers. We are a multimedia organization that also produces digital-exclusive content, social media content, newsletters, podcasts and events.

Qualifications:

·Degree or diploma in journalism or related fields of study

·Minimum five-years’ experience with substantive editing of long-form magazine features

·Experience with copy editing and proofreading; knowledge of Canadian Press style

·Ability to take a story from pitch to print:

·Experience with reviewing and developing story ideas, and assigning and managing freelance journalists of all skill levels

·Ability to develop story ideas, assign and write “tight and bright” short pieces for our front-of-book Snapshot section

• Resourcefulness – someone who recognizes challenges and offers solutions, and has an entrepreneurial spirit
• A network of trusted freelance journalists from diverse communities
• Impeccable written and verbal English communication
• Proficiency with InDesign
• Detail-oriented with the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines
• Excellent time-management skills with the ability to multitask

·Knowledge of Christianity is an asset

:

·Editing Features: Developing story ideas, assigning, editing stories; assisting with writing display copy; reviewing and inputting fact-checking changes

·Editing Front of Book (Snapshot section): Developing story ideas, assigning, writing, editing

·Production: Offering feedback on layouts; proofreading features and Snapshot and entering changes in InDesign

·Meetings: Participation in weekly editorial meetings; feature display meetings; other meetings as required

·Mentorship: Work with interns to help them craft mid- and feature-length stories

Working Conditions:

●This position will work remotely

●Hours will be traditional office hours

Remuneration:

·$40/hour or $43,680 annually, plus medical benefits, pension plan and 7.5 days of vacation
