Job Description
The Technical Specialist Malignant Hematology is accountable for acting in accordance with the mission, vision, values and goals of the Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program (HRLMP) and those of St. Joseph's Hospital and Hamilton Health Sciences Corporations.
This position will foster an environment which supports clinical excellence, continuous learning, outcome and evaluation research and promote open, participative communication within and across the HRLMP as well as the clinical programs and services.
The Technical Specialist must be proficient working with a team that processes regional volumes to include a wide range of malignant and hematological disorders, leading validation studies, setting up protocols, interpreting data, compiling reports, as well as taking on a leadership role for facilitating professional development and continuing education within the profession to include the collaboration with Laboratory physicians, scientists and managers.
The Technical Specialist optimizes the provision of service by utilizing the available resources in an effective and efficient manner, liaises with various users of the service and with technologists regarding results and methodologies, and provides education to staff for new methodologies.
The Technical Specialist participates in short and long term planning, setting goals and objectives which will contribute to the program plans for meeting the needs of the clinical programs, maintains a high level of technical expertise, professional growth and development through literature reviews, professional associations and attending seminars and workshops.
Registered with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario
  • Degree/certificate from a recognized Health Management Program and/or Quality Management Program preferred
  • Demonstrated excellence in technical, developmental, research, problem-solving and project management skills
  • Advanced Registered Technologist, Bachelors of Science or Bachelor of Technology degree preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of Flow cytometry experience that includes interpretation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to correlate flow cytometry results with bone marrow morphology, cytochemical stains and molecular or cytogenetic test results
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication skills (written and verbal), interpersonal skills, team building and the ability to initiate and model positive change
  • Morphology experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the quality management system, new test validation and implementation processes building, and the ability to initiate and model positive change
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development
