Job Description
Mold Masters is looking for a Surface Grinder to join our team in Georgetown, ON. In this role, the Surface Grinder performs surface grinding operations to grind external surfaces of metallic components as per engineering drawings or specifications. This role is responsible for grinding a quality product that meets the customer’s expectations and maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.

What you’ll do:


  • Mount and dress the required Grinding Wheel for the Manual Grinder(s).
  • Set up and load 1 to three manual surface grinders; approximately 20 – 25 parts will be ground per day.
  • Complete minor troubleshooting as required.
  • Responsible for the safe operation of 1 – 3 Surface Grinders; responsible for keeping the workstation organized, clean and safe; the individual is responsible for continuous improvement activity within their workstation, the department and the organization.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
  • Ensure ISO guidelines are followed; follow Job Instruction Sheets and Tag Procedures etc.
  • Set appropriate magnetic chuck or related jig to hold components securely for grinding operations.
  • Use various hand tools and/or overhead hoist as required.
  • Ensure Team Leader is notified when run times are incorrect or product will not meet timelines.
  • Troubleshoot minor repairs or set up changes to the Grinder Wheel; ability to perform complex set up for product that is set on an angle; ability to communicate to Team Leader when machining times are not realistic and unable to meet deadlines.
  • Report discrepancies to the Planner or Team Leader.
  • Meet dimensional requirements of the blueprint and/or specifications; the product must look cosmetically appealing and must meet tolerances as close as minus zero and plus 13 microns; this role is responsible for the final product, there is a direct impact on customer service and scrap rates (i.e. the cost to scrap at this process is much higher).
  • Complete In-Process and Final-Process quality checks as required, using gauges, micrometers, indicators etc.
  • Conduct minor preventative maintenance procedures as scheduled.
  • Ensure components are cosmetically acceptable; ensure that dimensions meet customer requirements from process sheets and blueprints.
  • Make recommendations for productivity and/or method improvements.
  • Provide guidance and/or training for apprentices when required.
  • Ensure machining tasks are completed in accordance with specified run times.


Basic Requirements:


  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 1+ years’ experience and/or training in a precision machining environment.


Great to Haves:


  • The individual in this role must be able to read blueprints and operating, maintenance and safety policies and procedures.
  • Working in a precision machine shop is an asset in order for individuals to understand the requirements of tight tolerances.
  • Experience with manual surface grinding.
  • A licensed machinist.
  • Ability to multi-task, organize daily work priorities and utilize equipment with high efficiency.
