Job Description
Position Overview
Calian is looking for a Supervisor to provided leadership for the teams of Community Social Services Workers, who promote and enhance the overall welfare of individuals and families in isolated communities across Nunavut. This is a senior level practitioner position, which has the responsibility for managing and providing direct supervision to social workers and support staff at various levels of qualification, experience and training. Areas of services covered by the team include child welfare, adult protection, counseling (individual, group, mediation), aged/disabled, and adoptions.
In this vital role, candidates will be hired as full-time employees of Calian Group for a minimum of 12 months. The work location is considered “hybrid” with time being divided between Nunavut and the candidate’s home province. They will be supported for the duration of their contract by a Calian Contract Manager. Accommodations, Northern Living Allowance, and Travel Expenses will be covered for travel to Nunavut.
Expected start date is Fall 2023.
Responsibilities
  • Administers or arranges for the provision of relevant support services to individuals, families, older adults, and individuals with disabilities.
  • Participates in the department’s management by ensuring the team operates within the defined budget, preparing reports, ensuring program files are kept in accordance with regulations, as well as other tasks
  • Provides guidance and supervision to community social service workers and clerical staff, including monitoring caseloads, providing guidance on all mandated programs and services, coordinating team meetings, and providing performance reviews as needed
  • Provides a liaison service at large in the community including with RCMP, community councils and schools
Qualifications
  • Clear Vulnerable Sector Police Check
  • Social Work License in home province (Nunavut License not required)
  • Ability to speak in Inuktitut or Inuinnaqtun is an asset;
  • An undergraduate degree in Social Work (Master’s degree preferred);
  • Three years related experience including assessing, interviewing, counseling and facilitating;
  • A valid NU Class 5 driver's license is an asset.
  • One year of supervisory experience;

  • Must possess excellent spoken and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, provide leadership and supervision, handle competing priorities, resolve stressful or volatile situations, and seek appropriate supports when needed
  • On-call and travel to individual residences may be required
  • Demonstrated history of culturally sensitive practice
