Over the past 20 years, the Common Law Section of the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa has become a national and global leader in many fields. We are the only law school to offer a common law degree in both English and French, and our Faculty is one of the most accomplished in the country. Position purpose:


Reporting to the Deans of the Common Law and Civil Law Sections, the Executive Director, Innovation and Strategic Development provides a leadership role in the planning, development and implementation of strategic initiatives and activities for the Faculty of Law.


As part of the Deans’ Offices, the incumbent is responsible for the development and delivery of effective strategies, initiatives and efficient business processes to facilitate new academic and research partnerships with government, academia and industry, and to protect, develop and commercialize new academic programs and discoveries through technology partnerships, and new ventures.


The incumbent's responsibilities are critical to the Faculty of Law, to the outreach and external liaison requirements of technology development agencies and programs, and to links to professional peers in legal academic innovation, management and technology commercialization of academic programs and research initiatives.


In this role, your responsibilities will include:


Providing leadership and advice to the Deans and other executives on matters relating to planning, development and implementation of strategic initiatives and activities for Common Law and Civil Law portfolios.


Promoting and enhances the faculty’s leadership, visibility and profile in academic and research partnerships through establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with regional, provincial, national and international peers and sponsors.


Establishing objectives for the faculty’s business development strategic directions and priorities. Oversees the efficient management of collaborative academic and research facilitation and business development/technology transfer activities for the Faculty of Law. Builds momentum and develop an innovative mindset within the faculty.


Leading the creation, the promotion and solicitation of external opportunities for collaborative academic, research, and technology development. Develops externally funded programs for the growth of the Faculty of Law. Augment/supplement institutional funding in innovation and commercialization, in partnership with regional, provincial and/or national communities.


What you will bring:


Essential Qualifications


  • A JD or LL.L considered an asset.
  • Five (5) years of demonstrated experience in a Collaborative Academic, Research, Technology Commercialization and/or Business Development role in university, hospital, government or economic development agency.
  • A degree in Law or a B.A.
  • Seven (7) years of progressively responsible management experience in an academic research administration environment.


Other Skills And Competencies


  • Excellent people skills demonstrated by prior leadership positions, EDI initiatives, and service-oriented activities.
  • Experience in interpreting, explaining and applying policies and regulations.
  • Experience in program development and/or managing contract research projects.
  • Excellent understanding of university academic portfolio and research funding, programs and of the university structure in general.
  • Sound knowledge of advancement operations and leading practices, as well as an understanding of charitable giving regulations in Canada and the United States
  • Excellent understanding of commercialization and private sector partnerships.
  • Highest level of ethics and integrity in professional matters; sensitivity for confidentiality and scrupulous commitment to the best interests of uOttawa.
  • Demonstrated skill in managing, planning and implementing multiple projects, prioritizing and triaging work based upon sound decision-making principles and organizational goals and producing high quality work under pressure while meeting strict deadlines.
  • Proven ability in line management, leadership and working groups.
  • Experience in promoting academic and research expertise, technology and innovation outcomes.
  • Excellent listening, oral presentation and writing skills.
