General Accountability
Manages the activities and provides expertise for the electrical engineering work associated with rail vehicles (i.e. streetcar). This involves investigating and diagnosing complex engineering problems and making recommendations, preparing and modifying technical specifications, conducting inspections and/or testing, compiling reports, and managing these projects. Directly supervises subordinate staff engaged in these activities. The role takes professional responsibility for electrical design work as required by the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO). The role also works with and coordinates the work performed by external agencies in an effort to solve complex technical problems that may arise.
Key Job Functions
- Investigate and diagnose complex electrical engineering problems and recommend cost effective solutions.
- Prepare reports, document issues, provide expertise, and make recommendations related to assigned work in accordance with applicable regulations/codes and standards.

- Monitor and analyze vehicle reliability data and formulating programs to improve vehicle reliability.
- Arrange for or conduct inspections or measurements, prepare new and/or modify existing technical specifications, maintenance and test procedures, coordinate and supervise testing and perform failure analysis and other studies.
- Verify and approve electrical engineering drawings as a Professional Engineer.
- Direct and coordinate consultants, contractors and staff engaged in the work, assisting with supervision and training as required.
- Design complex electrical system solutions.
- Liaise with Group/Department staff, other Groups/Departments, and/or external organizations concerning matters regarding assigned work.

Education and Experience
- Registration as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario (PEO) is mandatory.
- University Degree in Electrical Engineering preferred.
- Completion of a university degree in a related discipline or combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
Additional Requirements
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and report writing skills.
- Computer and software literate with good working knowledge of applications related to the work.
- In-depth knowledge of vehicle testing procedures, commissioning programs and all associated electrical/electronic controls and quality controls concepts.
- Sound judgement supported by excellent technical, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong knowledge and experience in the design and development of DAQ and instrumentations for vehicle qualification, testing, investigation, commissioning.
- Must be able to direct, execute and harmonize working relationships with stakeholders for the advancement and completion of highly visible projects.
- Strong knowledge of project management concepts and practices with the ability to carry out and/or coordinate projects and studies.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the electrical engineering discipline, as related to rail vehicle engineering.
- Conversant with electrically/electronically actuated pneumatic and hydraulic systems and principles.
- Must have or quickly acquire familiarity with the TTC’s streetcar vehicle fleet and associated electrical and electronic equipment, as well as the various functions carried out by the department.
This position is designated Specified Management under the TTC's Fitness for Duty Policy. If you do not hold a designated position, you will be required to pass a drug test as part of the certification process.
