About RCRS:
Rugged Coast Research Society (RCRS) is a non-profit organization and registered charity with a multi-disciplinary team of marine industry professionals. Our team plans and safely executes research and restoration projects in the remote and rugged corners of British Columbia’s coast. Our vision is for the natural and coastal habitats of British Columbia to thrive and to support healthy populations of marine and terrestrial wildlife. Primarily, RCRS focuses on shoreline debris cleanup and abandoned “Ghost Gear”, derelict vessel and aquaculture removal.
:
RCRS is seeking a Bachelor of Science or Ph.D. student to design studies, test and monitor various environmental data points and report on the findings. The candidate will also be responsible for writing funding applications for science-based projects (salmon habitat stressor assessments, water monitoring, etc.). Additionally, the hired applicant will be responsible for designing and implementing said projects, creating survey methodologies, writing reports, fieldwork, data collection, analytics etc. This role will be a mix of remote (work-from-home) and fieldwork on Vancouver Island and the BC west/north coast.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Implement biological sampling and data collection by conducting aquatic and riparian habitat quality assessments; collection of samples for analysis.
- Salmon stock assessment
- Marine ecosystem monitoring and assessment (intertidal and subtidal)
- Watershed assessment
- Writing funding applications, reports, and grant proposals.
- Preparation, storage, and use of research equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Record accurate data, complete regular data entry, and maintain equipment as needed.
- Build-out ongoing data collection and new research projects.
- Conduct background research and create methodologies for measuring environmental data.
- Salmon habitat restoration
- Data recording and entry.
- Water quality monitoring
- Marine habitat restoration
- Create and carry out surveys.
Desired Skills and Qualifications:
- Experience operating or familiarity with outboard motorboats, Pleasure Craft Operator Card, or Small Vessel Operator Proficiency Certificate is considered an asset but not a requirement.
- Interest in biology, local species, and ecosystems; GPS-based technologies and survey techniques.
- Experience in data collection, fish stock assessment, water monitoring and testing, and report writing.
- Field skills; the ability to work in physically challenging environments and adverse conditions.
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Pursuing or completing post-secondary education in biology, ecology, environmental science, or resource management (or equivalent knowledge and experience).
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Science Degree (in progress or complete) in biology, environmental science, ecology, natural science, OR environmental technician, environmental management education and 2+ years of relevant experience.
- Valid driver’s license, a current driver’s abstract, and access to a vehicle.
Salary & Position Details:
- Location: Remote/In-Field
- Start Date: July 15- August 1, 2023
- Anticipated Hours: 25-40hrs/week
- Wage: To be negotiated based on education/experience.
