  • About Us:

We are on a mission to make menstrual health equitable in Canada. We conduct research to inform and support advocacy work for menstrual equity, connect people and advocacy organizations to build community, and provide those in need with period supplies to work towards menstrual equity and an end to period poverty.

    Key Program Descriptions

    CHARMS

CHARMS stands for Collaboration Hub - Advocacy for Reproductive & Menstrual Services. CHARMS is a digital community built on the Mighty Networks platform that allows reproductive justice advocates to connect with each other and share resources and opportunities to collaborate and convene. CHARMS was developed based on a community consultation conducted in 2020, where we interviewed 27 menstrual equity advocates to identify gaps and potential solutions to drive the movement forward. CHARMS was launched in November 2021 CHARMS has 180+ active members. CHARMS also hosts several advocacy toolkits that our team has developed, as well as two digital courses on menstrual health and access (which will become available next year).

    Menstrual Health Education and Training

Free Periods Canada partners with other non-profit organizations to offer workshops on various topics related to menstrual health. In the past, our team members have been invited to provide guest lectures and facilitate workshops for students enrolled in Social Sciences at Douglas College.

    Research and Community Consultations

Each year, Free Periods Canada collaborates with an academic institution and a community organization to lead a community-based participatory research project. Our research interest and focus are driven by community needs, and regularly produce resources and digital knowledge translation tools as the end product.

    Organization Goals and Objectives

    1. Synthesize and Generate Knowledge

We conduct research and community consultations and synthesize information on menstrual health and equity to guide our own advocacy work, as well as the work of other menstrual advocacy groups.

    2. Develop Knowledge Translation Tools

We develop evidence-based digital knowledge translation tools such as interactive infographics, visual reports, educational modules and podcasts to build advocacy capacity.

    3. Convene and foster connections

We create and host workshops and events to share menstrual health and equity knowledge and bring menstrual advocacy groups and people interested in learning about periods together to strengthen Canada’s menstrual advocacy community.

    4. Make menstrual supplies accessible

We advocate for free and accessible period supplies for all menstruators. Our chapter at the University of British Columbia collects and distributes period supplies on campus and across the Lower Mainland in BC.

As a Graphic Illustrator, your responsibilities will include:

    • Conduct research to generate concept ideas for illustrating diverse experiences of menstruation
    • Develop and produce sketches and final illustrations by hand or using computer-assisted design (CAD) software
    • Participating in an in-person, facilitated workshop in Vancouver to co-develop concepts for illustrations with community members
    • Set the overall look, produce graphic elements and visual content of an infographic on menstrual health education
    • Attending weekly check-in meetings to stay informed and up-to-date on project progress and developments

To be considered for this role, you should have:

    • Strong communication and time management skills
    • Familiarity with non-profits and feminist activist groups is a plus.
    • Experience using various graphic illustration software
    • An interest in participating in brainstorming sessions and coming up with solutions through a co-design process

    Compensations:

    • This role offers a competitive hourly rate of $25-30
    • Non-linear workdays and flexible work hours are offered, allowing for a degree of flexibility in the work schedule
    • As a contractor, you are expected to have your own laptop or other devices required to generate the illustrations. Free Periods Canada will set up software access as needed.
