Your Challenge
Help bring research to life and drive your career forward with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), Canada's largest research and technology organization.
We are looking for a Research Officer, to join our Thermometry and Radiometry Team within the Metrology Research Centre. The Metrology Research Centre is committed to fostering innovation through high-precision measurement science and advancements in metrology. The Research Officer, Thermometry and Radiometry would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.
The Metrology Research Centre is Canada’s national metrology institute and, as such, realizes the measurement units of the SI system and disseminates them to government and industrial clients. The Thermometry and Radiometry Team is responsible for the realization and dissemination of temperature and optical power.
The Research Officer will join a team of experts performing original research and development, advancing the field of metrology in temperature and radiometry.
You will work on the metrological characterization of single-photon sources and detectors and use them for metrological standards and enable uptake of optical quantum technology.
You will provide traceability to our client thermometry and radiometry service facilities (such as spectral responsivity and radiation thermometry calibration services) using our primary realization facilities (cryogenic radiometer and high-temperature fixed points).
You will develop and implement the realization of the temperature scale using high-temperature fixed points.
Together with the other members of the team, you will design new proposals for different research initiatives and run the corresponding funded projects, including project reporting, management and dissemination of results (peer reviewed publications, conference presentations).
Screening Criteria
Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:
Education
PhD degree in physics or engineering.
Specialization in quantum optics could be considered an asset.

Experience
  • Experience with data analysis and with communication of research findings.
  • Experience working with laboratory optical components and systems (detectors, lasers, etc.);
  • Experience in designing laboratory experiments;
  • Experience in programming, computer interfacing, and control of instruments by computer; and
  • Experience in hands-on laboratory practices such as cryogenic and vacuum systems;

Relocation
Relocation assistance will be determined in accordance with the NRC's directives.
Compensation
This position is classified as a Research Officer (RO), a group that is unique to the NRC. Candidates are remunerated based on their expertise, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience relative to the requirements of the level. The salary scale for this group is vast, from $57,220 to $161,754 per annum, which permits for employees of all levels from new graduates to world renowned experts to be fairly compensated for their contributions.
NOTE: Please note that the full RO/RCO salary scale has five levels. Salary determination will be based on a review of the candidate’s expertise, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience relative to the requirements of the level. As such, the initial salary could be within another level of the RO/RCO salary scale (i.e. above or below the intended level for this position).
