Do you have experience conducting Public Health inspections?


Do you possess sound knowledge of various Acts, Regulations and Municipal By-laws as it directly relates to health inspections?


Do you have excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work with various internal and external stakeholders?


The public health inspector is responsible for delivering public health programs and services in the community. A variety of professional and technical skills are used to conduct inspections, investigate health hazards, conduct risk assessments, and enforce compliance with applicable legislation. They will lay charges, issue orders and exclusion letters as well as make appearances to testify in court.


In addition, the public health inspector investigates complaints and provides consultative and educational services to clients, assists with mentoring of practicum students, may be requested to participate in project working groups and performs a defined role in public health emergencies.


General Programs Team position


Reporting to a Supervisor, General Programs in Health Protection, with work potentially occurring in any of three local municipalities in Peel.


In this role you will


  • Conduct rabies investigations
  • Conduct food service premise inspections
  • Conduct recreational water premise inspections
  • Conduct health hazard investigations
  • Respond to emergency situations (water interruptions, power outage, fires, floods, etc.)
  • Provide technical assessments of applicable building plans, investigate complaints, provide consultative and educational services to clients, including on various Acts, Regulations, and Guidelines
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through continuous development, modeling inclusive behaviors, and proactively managing bias
  • Prepare response to Freedom of Information requests
  • Provide accurate and thorough documentation of activities, issue warnings and charges; prepare court case briefs and present evidence in legal proceedings
  • Conduct inspections of small drinking water systems
  • Conduct special events inspections
  • Perform a defined role in public health emergencies
  • Investigate suspect food-borne illnesses and outbreaks


Education and Information Team position


Reporting to the Supervisor of the Education and Information team, you will be responsible for inspections and investigations related to food safety and infection control and responding to public inquiries on the Environmental Health Contact Centre. In addition, planning, developing, and implementing environmental health educational and promotional programs, activities, and materials. This includes the Food Handler Certification course, presentations at in-service, other meetings, and related events.


In this role you will


  • Perform a defined role in public health emergencies, lay charges, issue orders and exclusion letters, prepare MFIPPA requests, prepare crown briefs and testify in court
  • Perform technical assessments of applicable building plans, investigate complaints and provide consultative and educational services to clients
  • Use professional and technical skills to inspect and investigate health hazards, conduct risk assessments, and enforce compliance under various Acts, Regulations, Guidelines, and municipal by-laws for food safety, communicable disease investigation and control, infection control and health hazard investigation
  • Conduct food safety and infection control inspections
  • Provide consultative services and direction to clients on Environmental Health programs and health hazards in the community, including various Acts, Regulations, Guidelines, and municipal by-laws
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through continuous development, modeling inclusive behaviors, and proactively managing bias
  • Perform technical assessments while staffing the Environmental Health Contact Centre on rotation
  • Investigate communicable diseases


Required Qualifications for both positions


  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) and presentation skills
  • Able to work evenings and weekends as required – the frequency of which may vary between positions
  • Proficient computer skills Windows, MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, EIM, Hedgehog, and use of a tablet computer in the field
  • Experience in enforcement (issuing orders and charges, preparing crown briefs, and testifying in court)
  • Proficient computer skills -Windows XP, MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet, EIM, Hedgehog and use of a tablet computer in the field
  • Experience conducting inspections and conducting communicable disease investigations
  • Demonstrated strong judgment and investigative and problem-solving abilities
  • Knowledge of Incident Management System (IMS) and emergency response
  • An ability to work in an environment with competing and shifting priorities
  • A Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspector’s certification
  • Knowledge of Tier Two documentation software
  • A university degree in applied science with a major/specialization in public health
  • An ability to travel to various regional locations within Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon. This may include multiple site visits in one shift
  • Knowledge of the Health Protection and Promotion Act, Ontario Public Health Standards & Protocols, and other applicable legislation/regulations
  • Exceptional time management and organizational abilities
  • A minimum of one year experience as a public health inspector; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

Work Mode & Job Location at 7120 Hurontario Street, Mississauga, ON


In this role you will have the ability to work remotely and attend on-site when required based on operational requirements at the 7120 Hurontario St., Mississauga, ON worksite. The frequency of on-site activities may vary on a weekly basis and based on operational requirements. Your remote work location must be located within the province of Ontario.


Hours of Work 35 hours per week
