Sun Life Canada Distribution (SLFD) is one of the leading financial institutions that offer Canadians holistic advice and solutions including insurance, wealth and health through a team of digitally-enabled and insights-driven human Advisors. We are on an exciting journey to transform the Advisor experience that increases ease of doing business, growth, productivity, and Client engagement. Reporting into Advisor Journey hubs that are aligned to journey stages, the Product Owner will support delivery of digital experiences, tools and capabilities to Advisors. The Product Owner will jointly lead delivery teams with Tech Lead from Digital Business Technology & Services (DBTS), as well as working closely with Advisors, Client Experience Office (CXO) and other Sun Life business units / functions.
What will you do?
Product vision and strategy
  • Be accountable for product-specific objectives and key results (OKRs)
  • Support the development of a clear product vision aligned to SLFD business strategy and outcomes
  • Lead the development and delivery of product roadmaps that are aligned to user journey maps and story maps
Product development and management
  • Together with Tech Lead, lead a squad comprising scrum master, service delivery manager, business analysts, business systems analysts, developers, testers
  • Integrate usability studies and research into product requirements to enhance user satisfaction and ensure user-driven design
  • Maximize the value produced by agile team by ensuring the digital capability or experience meet the user’s needs and aligned with product vision
  • Continuously monitor and measure end-user behaviors and usage of the product to inform ongoing refinement of product roadmap and feature pipeline
Planning and execution
  • Support development of business governance deliverables (e.g. business case, risk assessments)
  • Partner with Change Management team to develop and execute on adoption strategy to drive Advisor usage of digital tools and capabilities
  • Oversee delivery team (e.g. agile, Kanban) jointly with Tech Lead and ensure the product delivers as intended and dynamically adjusting plans to deliver on OKRs
  • Drive problem solving of complex issues through in-depth research, identifying options and evaluating against strategic and execution criteria to recommend a proposed approach
  • Ensure product addresses applicable legal, compliance regulatory and internal policy requirements
  • Work with Platform and Journey owner to translate product vision into a strategic yet pragmatic roadmap that feeds into a continuously prioritized backlog(s)
  • Proactively identify potential issues and risks to ensure goals are achieved
  • Review QA test plans to align with acceptance criteria, facilitate testing and review of early builds for adherence to functional requirements
Stakeholder management
  • Keep Advisor Journey / Hub Leads and stakeholders informed of key issues, risks and interdependencies
  • Collaborate with key partners including Advisors, field management, DBTS, CXO and other business units and functions (e.g. legal, compliance, risk)
  • Identify areas of the business affected by product delivery and determine appropriate approach to engage with relevant stakeholders
  • Build and manage relationships with key partners, including effectively engaging executives
Communication and relationship management
  • Proactively stay in touch with internal partners to maintain an understanding of new developments in their areas and identify opportunities for collaboration
  • Tailor both written and verbal communication based on audience and situation to maximize buy-in and establish productive working relationships
  • Effectively communicate and influence with key insights, ideas and strategies, to an executive level audience within SLFD and across internal Canada partners in a clear, compelling and concise manner
Team management
  • Partner with coach and support them to effectively coach the squad to continuously improve
  • Effectively influence squad team members with no direct reporting relationships
  • Actively promote SLFD brand to attract talent and external partners
  • Provide leadership, motivation and guidance to squad
What do you need to succeed?
Domain expertise
  • 5+ years of relevant agile digital delivery experience
  • Demonstrate knowledge of technology platforms or ability to learn about technology and digital products, experience working on technical products is a plus
  • Proven track record of implementation experience of systems or digital capabilities in financial services
  • Strong knowledge of distribution, wealth and /or insurance space
Strategic Thinking And Analytical Skills
  • Ability to solve problems effectively by balancing various lenses business, operations, design and technology
  • Some experience in creative, human-centered solutions which balance end-user experience, total cost of ownership, complexity, and speed to market
  • Possess business acumen to analyze and generate insights from OKRs as well as foundational quantitative analytical skills to support Platform / Journey Owner to develop business cases
Agile Experience
  • Scrum Alliance Product Owner certification
  • Experienced in facilitating agile ceremonies, managing a backlog/release plan, tracking team level metrics, removing blockers

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
