Job Description
161 Bay Street (93021), Canada, Toronto,Toronto, Ontario,

Product Designer (Principal Associate)

At Capital One, we don’t just hire people - we invest in them. We’ve worked hard to create and foster a culture that values people, collaboration, integrity, and respect for one another. We pride ourselves in being a place of opportunity that empowers our team of disruptors, dreamers, and doers. And we’re not your typical bank; we’re on a mission to change banking for good by bringing ingenuity, simplicity and humanity to the work we do. Antiquated legacy platforms have no place here; we’re building a leading information-based technology company where you’ll be partnering with other talented people across the organization on complex projects, contributing to the value we deliver every day. We measure our efforts by the success our customers enjoy and the advocacy they exhibit, and we succeed only when they do.

We are looking for an experienced Product Designer (Senior Associate) to join our Experience Design team in transforming the overall experience into a more accessible and understandable one for our audience. Our team is at the forefront of enriching our customers’ digital experiences and represent the voice of our customers.

About You

  • You’re an innovator and storyteller who embraces an environment where you can experiment, learn, and change banking for good
  • You value collaboration
  • You have working knowledge of responsive design and accessibility standards and a solid understanding of visual hierarchy
  • You have experience with, and contributing to, design systems
  • You have experience working closely with Product and Engineering in an agile, iterative, data-informed product development environment
  • You possess a thoughtful, inclusive, and empathetic approach to design that meets every customer where they are
  • Your understanding of user-centred design processes means you can balance customer needs with business goals and have the capability and ambition to influence product design across the organization.
  • You think user-first, have a bold design perspective, have an eye for responsive, accessible design, and rarely be satisfied with the first iteration
  • You pay attention to detail

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the ongoing development and refinement of our design system
  • Design experiences that make complex tasks and workflows simple and intuitive for all customers
  • Collect user research and integrate feedback as part of your design process
  • Help to brainstorm and propose design solutions that take our products to the next level, while keeping the product direction, visuals and user experience in consideration
  • Help to define and refine user experiences, from supporting requirements gathering and user research efforts, through user flow mapping, prototyping, and UI design
  • Help to drive design team culture by participating in and helping to lead ceremonies and team events
  • Be a critical and contributing member of the Experience Design team, focused on helping to define strategy and execution of the overall user experience
  • Create prototypes, wireframes, sketches, user flows, journey maps and other digital tools to test and improve user experiences in collaboration with key stakeholders across the organization
  • Help to champion user-centred design across the organization

Education And Experience

  • 2-3 years of Product Design experience, ideally with consumer and/or mobile products. Financial services experience is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of responsive design and accessibility standards
  • Post-secondary school education, preferably in UX, Content and Design.
  • Knowledge of both UX and UI, though we understand you’re likely to be stronger in one over the other
  • Strong working knowledge of industry tools - Figma, Photoshop, Illustrator, HTML/CSS, and Mural
  • A portfolio that demonstrates your involvement throughout the design cycle, with a focus on your conceptual thinking, problem-solving, and visual design skills in responsive websites. Mobile apps would be a bonus.
  • Experience with information architecture, page hierarchies, user flows, UX research, wireframing, design systems, and user-centred design principles
