Job Overview


Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, consultative & results driven professional to join our team in the role of Electrical Engineer, in OPG’s Hydro-Thermal Operations (HTO), Plant Engineering Services (PES), located near Kingston, ON.


Reporting to the local Plant Technical Support Manager, the Electrical Engineer is the lead engineer that takes full technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating projects that are necessary for the continuous safe, efficient and economical commissioning and operation of hydroelectric and thermal generating station assets.


The Electrical Engineer works within the Plant Engineering Services (PES), which provides engineering technical support to all HTO site across the province in a centre led matrix organization.

Key Accountabilities
  • Collaborate with customers, stakeholders, consultants, contractors, and government agencies as required.
  • As a technical expert in electrical engineering provide advice, guidance, consultation and services to engineering problems including:
  • Respond to emergencies, equipment failure, unsatisfactory equipment performance, conduct field investigations, prepare reports, and recommend actions.
  • Plan, coordinate and conduct Electrical engineering assessments, studies, inspections, investigations, designs, and evaluations for generators, power systems transformers, control associated with hydroelectric and thermal generating stations and associated infrastructure.
  • Serve on study, project teams or task groups.
  • Arc/ and grounding assessments
  • Provide technical advice and guidance on a variety of technical matters of hydroelectric and thermal station maintenance operations, performance, design, and commissioning.
  • Provide input to business plans, work plans, budgets with respect to project priorities, schedules and resource requirements.
  • Electrical/P&C engineering matters related to projects;
  • Preparation of drawings, technical specifications, construction estimates, request for proposals, proposal evaluation, award, contract negotiations & administration & co-ordination, construction monitoring, resolution of contract disputes.
  • Develop plans, standards and technical procedures for inspection, maintenance and monitoring programs.
  • Pre-start health and safety reviews, investigation of safety or technical incidents.


EDUCATION


  • 4 year university degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Candidate must be a fully licensed engineer in the province of Ontario, or be eligible to be licensed in the Province of Ontario


Qualifications


  • Experience working in an industrial environment with distributed control systems, high voltage installations, protection and control schemes, and large electric motors and generators (asset);
  • Experience conducting assessments, testing, studies, inspections, investigations, designing, evaluating, construction monitoring & maintenance of electrical works associated with generating stations;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the OH&S Act and Regulations, especially for Industrial Establishments (Ont. Reg. 851) & Construction (Ont. Reg. 213) in Ontario & the Ontario Electrical Safety Code & various codes and standards associated with electrical engineering and application of their requirements;
  • Reporting preparation, and strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work with people;
  • Software associated with electrical engineering, field survey, monitoring and instrumentation;
  • Valid Ontario Drivers License in good standing;
  • Experience working in a Generating Facility, industrial power system or utilities organization is preferred;
  • Willingness to travel via road, airplane, float plane, helicopter etc. 10% of time;
  • A results oriented, efficient & value oriented focus, excellent verbal and written communicator, with high integrity to uphold company values including H&S, and protection of the environment;
  • Experience using AutoCAD is preferred;
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P. Eng) designation in good standing with Professional Engineers Ontario (or equivalent) considered an asset ;
