Plant Engineer

The Opportunity:


Under the direction of the President, this senior management role will require strong prioritization, influencing skills and attention to detail. The position is responsible for the development and execution of key projects for the Company.


The position is also responsible for deploying technical know-how to successfully support the execution of projects to the business that deliver a sustained competitive advantage.


The maintenance team will report directly to this position and this position will lead all CAPEX Engineering projects and Automation / Line Setup commissioning and optimizing or Production and Packaging lines etc.


Responsibilities & Deliverables:


  • Develop and deliver clear training materials for appropriate staff. Listen to production staff and support the resolution of challenges or the introduction of process improvements
  • Project Management competence to keep projects on Scope, Budget, and within timeline.
  • Providing technical know-how to support the execution of projects.
  • Challenge activities not aligned with objectives.
  • As a key knowledge holder this role provides insight and judgement for business decisions related to capital budgets and projects.
  • Contribute to the process of creating and improving food segment engineering standards.
  • Participate in, and adhere to, health and safety initiatives and requirements. Contribute to a winning environment which promotes safety, trust and confidence.
  • Contribute to capital project preparation process providing the most cost-efficient technical solution based on the required standards and in line with the project KPI’s including technology and machinery selection, costing, specifications, obtaining offers, negotiation with suppliers, buying plan creation.
  • Technical feasibility
  • Design, build, maintain and improve machines and tools within the plant.
  • Engage with Operation and project team members proactively while performing assigned tasks
  • Design, document and provision the manufacturing processes for the improvement of existing processes, design of new technologies, and/or scaling up of production volumes.
  • Ensure delivery of quality work
  • Be an active member of the Executive Team developing knowledge, best project management practices and collaborative ways of work.
  • Understanding and developing skills that support excellence in execution.
  • Manage the installation of assigned project work
  • Technical information required for project design
  • Innovative ideas
  • Evaluate existing and develop new manufacturing processes by analyzing production data and gathering information from colleagues in production and quality control.
  • Lead process improvements for safety, quality, reliability, cost, efficiencies, etc.
  • Work on special projects and other duties/responsibilities as assigned.
  • Transfer and apply improvements to new and existing equipment across the facility.
  • Project Management of major investment projects, using best practices.
  • Deliver project(s) in time, within the budget and approved scope.
  • In depth understanding of the plant’s operations, key challenges, and opportunities.
  • Ideas that provide a sustained technical competitive advantage
  • Develop a collaborative relationship and strong partnerships with internal customers creating strong links and understanding of their needs and business priorities.
  • Providing input into the project development process
  • Develop and monitor process control points in manufacturing process and testing requirements/procedures; develop and maintain statistical controls.
  • Align Stakeholders and effectively resolve issues, escalating when necessary to keep projects on track
  • Collaborate with suppliers of outsourced parts, assemblies and products to resolve quality or supply issues


Qualifications & Competencies:

  • Excellent Project Management skills as well as extensive experience executing technical projects
  • Strong problem resolution skills
  • 7 years technical experience in a Manufacturing, Engineering or related discipline
  • Demonstrated leadership experience and influencing skills
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize duties and execute tasks in a timely manner
  • 5 years’ experience with within the food manufacturing industry
  • Strong technical knowledge of manufacturing processes and systems, process and packaging automation, and controls
  • Skills and knowledge in preparing and updating mfg. documentation such as process maps and work instructions
  • Teamwork-oriented approach to achieving goals
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Knowledge of engineering disciplines: Process, Packaging, Mechanical, Electrical, Construction or Computer Services
  • Strong self-initiative and work ethic
  • Excellent organizational ability and attention to detail
  • P.Eng. accreditation is a strong asset.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
