Job Description
The Communications Specialist is to develop and coordinate PHRI communications internally and externally by establishing various communications strategies and methods.


  • Support study teams with PHRI standard content for study specific newsletters as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Create written and digital communications to a variety of research audiences which will include: internal newsletters; new releases; website; research report; departmental reports; and announcements for study events, meetings and workshops.
  • Management of the PHRI Corporate Identity materials.
  • Lead in the development of standard messages for both internal and external
  • Coordinate and manage with design and print agencies in production of publications and print collateral.
  • Liaise as an integral, strategic and practical information-sharing resource across the organization and within work groups.
  • Coordinate the complexities of the various messages and prioritizing competing deadlines.
  • Access up to date and relevant data and information from clinical researchers.
  • Establish standards and resource libraries for the various requirements.


As a condition of employment, you are required to submit proof of full COVID-19 vaccination to Employee Health Services.


  • Excellent synthesis and writing skills, strong editing skills
  • Minimum of 5 years in Healthcare communications
  • Proven experience in communications and knowledge translation, preferably within a science/research based industry
  • Minimum of 1 year in communications in Digital Media
  • Proficiency in Internet Explorer, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook, and WordPress.
  • Experience in Web-based content management
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Science or Clinical Research
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative where required, while working under pressure with often changing deadlines
  • Excellent oral communication skills and ability to interact with diplomacy and tact with colleagues, the general public, as well as individuals in the scientific community
  • Knowledge of Canada’s Clinical Trials Environment an asset.

The Population Health Research Institute (PHRI), a joint institute of Hamilton Health Sciences and McMaster University, with over 300 employees working directly with 60 researchers.
