Job Purpose The payroll accountant is responsible to oversee employee payroll for Rise Air and Snowbird Aviation Services employees including payroll calculations, deductions, tax filings and payment of employee benefit and retirement plan premiums and contributions and ensure that payroll is processed in a timely and accurate manner. This position handles confidential information on a regular basis.


Primary Responsibilities


Payroll


  • Maintain manual and electronic employee payroll records.
  • Liaise with human resources personnel as required to ensure accurate employee record
  • Review electronic timecards and other pay documents for accuracy and completeness, and ensure they are authorized for processing in accordance with company policies and procedures and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Execute payroll transactions utilizing payroll/accounting software including transmitting, processing, and generating payroll runs and create associated journal entries for reconciliation and month end reports.
  • Deduct, reconcile, and remit amounts ordered to be withheld though garnishment, third party demand (e.g., retirement plan, social fund, union dues and receiver general payments, as required), or support deduction orders.
  • Prepare records of employment and final payments for departing employees.
  • Set up employees, monitor submissions of approved timecards and ensure valid data transfers to and from payroll service through the electronic timecard system.
  • Process year-end adjustments, including T4s, to meet Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) deadlines.
  • Report and remit assessable earnings to provincial Workers Compensation Boards where
  • Maintain year to date individual employee vacation balances both earned and accrued.
  • Assist with additional duties as assigned, which includes cross training with other finance
  • Maintain paper and electronic payroll records, employee records, and necessary records and documentation for billing and reporting purposes.
  • Ability to interpret the Canada Labour Code's labour standards regulations.
  • Respond to and direct pay-related inquiries from employees to the appropriate personnel.
  • Work closely with information technology personnel to identify opportunities to increase effectiveness of system utilization, integration with other company systems, response time and software capabilities/needs.


Reporting and Planning


  • Participate in department meetings and activities, providing advice as appropriate.
  • Meet payroll operational standards by contributing information to strategic plans and reviews.
  • Meet payroll financial standards by providing annual budget information, monitoring expenditures, identifying variances, and implementing corrective actions.
  • Provide monthly and/or annual reports, correspondences, statistical summaries, and other materials as required.
  • Develop best practices to improve efficiency of the payroll process.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by staying up to date on latest changes and/or update to legislation and software usage.


Qualifications


Typically, the knowledge and skills required for this position include post-secondary education in accounting, finance or related field from an accredited college or university, with a minimum five years' experience in accounting and payroll administration. Payroll association certification, and experience in the aviation industry with a working knowledge of HR cycles and accounting software such as Sage 300 is an asset. A combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • Proficient in utilizing Microsoft Office applications and payroll/HRMS software. Ability to support, strengthen and enhance safety initiatives

  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to organize, multi-task and prioritize.
  • Ability to take initiative and ownership of projects and tasks and execute effectively and in a timely manner.
  • Professional judgement and well-defined conflict resolution skills in handling sensitive situations with tact, diplomacy, and high ethical standards.
  • Proven relationship management skills and demonstrated ability to influence, collaborate and negotiate with both internal partners and external stakeholders to achieve results.
