Job Description

The National Director, Health & Safety will serve several functions which include anticipating, identifying, and evaluating hazardous conditions and risks. They will also assist with applying engineering and administrative controls via the Health & Safety and Management System to reduce the impacts and safety risks associated with site operations. Also responsible for supporting the collection and reporting of site KPIs for use at Business and Corporate levels and overseeing the H&S Management System and day-to-day operations related to safety, health programs, objectives/targets, personnel training, regulatory compliance, recordkeeping/reporting, and other associated programs at the site. The National Director also represents the site as the functional Leader or supports the Manager if present at the site. With several direct reports, the National Director is also assigning work and managing workloads of subordinate staff, providing guidance and feedback for team members in accomplishing tasks and goals; sets expectations and clarifies responsibilities.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Leads audit programs to ensure employee health & safety while ensuring compliance to health, safety, and environmental laws
  • Supports operational leadership on the implementation of H&S processes and plans for various project sites
  • Works with Divisional leaders to identify, develop and implement comprehensive change management initiatives to enhance the company’s safety culture
  • Impact culture with senior leaders on broad cross-functional H&S Management System topics
  • Leverages internal and external resources and expertise to develop focused business practices across the organization
  • Facilitates integration and implementation of H&S business planning and performance related to all work disciplines and field/operations personnel and Operating Group strategies
  • Uses business understanding and collaboration to align the H&S Management System to operational business needs
  • Develops risk communication, H&S education/training programs, and other initiatives that positively impact H&S programs, strategies, and culture
  • Reports H&S performance against established goals and works with the leadership team in developing corrective and continual improvement actions
  • Ensures Corporate H&S Action Plans are aligned with Operating Groups’ objectives
  • Participates in corporate and business initiatives to identify and develop recommended practices
  • Provides strategic and tactical leadership on the implementation and enhancement of the companies Health & Safety Management System


Knowledge, Skills and Competencies:

  • Ability to think innovatively, offer creative solutions to problems to anticipate business issues, and align H&S operational priorities
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in H&S leadership with at least 5 of those years at a senior manager or director level
  • Degree, Diploma or Professional Certification in H&S or equivalent; ideally with some post-secondary business education
  • Ability to influence stakeholders and operational leaders through consensus and engagement on H&S matters, driving business objectives
  • Experience in training and education
  • Proven senior-level leadership, coaching, business acumen, and technical/functional H&S expertise coupled with clear and concise communication skills
  • Proven experience of learning the business, making relationships matter, and having a development mindset
  • Ability to work independently and capable of forming strong working relationships/partnerships with Site Leadership teams, clients, and hourly workforce
  • Results-oriented with a continual improvement mindset and experience in change management, ideally with some form of change management education
  • French language skills are considered an asset
  • CRSP, CHSC, NCSO Designation or relevant training and experience
  • Experience in developing & implementing H&S Plans and H&S program/practice management and validation
  • Excellent safety and health track record in programs and processes
  • Strong computer, written, oral, interpersonal communication skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to influence without authority enable you to inspire teamwork, confidence, and cooperation on our Corporate safety councils
  • Exposure to managing a variety of complex projects that have demonstrated a positive cultural change in business operations, ideally with some functional project management education
  • Experience establishing short/mid-term work plans and optimizing resources to ensure H&S objectives (e.g., aligned with productivity, quality, costs) are consistently met
  • Demonstrated success in influencing change (gaining buy-in) at multiple levels and developing and implementing dynamic and fluid programs in a complex organization


Additional Skill Sets Needed:

  • International experience understanding both US and Canadian H&S rules and processes
  • Ability to develop, mentor, train H&S team members
  • Demonstrated ability to create, develop functioning teams and drive improved H&S results
  • Experience managing a North American Team


Additional Working Conditions + Physical Demands:

  • Drug and alcohol testing may be required to access project sites, post-incident and reasonable cause
  • This is an office-based position with regular travel to various sites and office locations, 25-50% of the time
  • This person must be fit enough to successfully access and get around job sites to complete inspections, investigations, and audits
