Summary
Energy and Water Services Millwrights are responsible for the installation, maintenance, inspection and repair/replacement of UBC Utilities machinery and equipment. This includes all mechanical equipment used in utility distribution systems, including pumps, material handling systems, fans, hydraulic systems, and mechanical power transmission (drives) systems owned and/or maintained by UBC Energy and Water Services.
Duties include extensive rigging work as well as pump and mechanical system repairs. The E&WS Millwright performs skilled work at the Journey-person level to ensure and maximize the functionality of Utilities equipment to minimize downtime, maintain and extend equipment lifespan and ensure safe and efficient operating conditions at all times. E&WS Millwrights are expected to work on mechanical equipment throughout UBC Energy and Water Services’ Jurisdiction.
Organizational Status
Works under the direction of the People and Process Manager Plant (plant chief operating engineer), the Assistant Chief Engineer and/ or People and Process Manager Utilities Trades.
Work Performed
Fabricate/Install new University machinery and equipment.
Operate lathes and milling machines and machine shop tools to fabricate parts and components.
Perform inspections and conduct preventative maintenance of equipment.
Diagnose equipment failures and/or malfunctions and repair as needed.
Undertake equipment performance testing and commissioning.
Answers emergency calls, assess situations, takes actions to make the situation safe and minimize damage, determines repairs required, and makes repairs as necessary.
Rebuild compressors, pumps, pneumatic/hydraulic systems, material handling systems, and other mechanical systems within the skillset of a Millwright.
Welding, brazing, soldering.
Coordination or rigging and lifting equipment.
Read and interpret schematics, blueprints, operating manuals to assist in the installation, diagnostic and repair of plant or mechanical system equipment.
Repair and maintain plant primary and auxiliary equipment, as well as other mechanical systems under the care of Energy and Water Services.
Plan and coordinate plant maintenance shutdowns with the plant chief engineer, the assistant chief engineer, and plant operators.
Prepare reports using computer-based office software and UBC’s CMMS systems.
Effectively use mobile devices (smart phones, tablets, etc.) and digital devices.
Interpret and carry out written and/or oral instructions and create written reports as required.
Effectively communicates and responds to electronic communication (e-mails, text messages, ect.) as required.
Communicate with customers and other trade groups as required to ensure the efficient delivery of service.
Follow safe work practices and procedures as per company policies and procedures and BC Works Safe regulations
Use precision alignment equipment such as laser alignment tools, dial indicators, calipers and micrometers.
Coordinate rigging and lifting equipment.
Participates in confined space entry, and related duties, as required. Attend all training sessions as required.
Operates Forklifts And Other Specialized Vehicles As Required.
Effectively communicates and responds to emails, phone calls, and text messages as required. Using communication devices (radios, cell phones, etc.) as required.
Maintains a safe work environment in respect to items such as chemical\fuel spills and to maintain a reasonable level of cleanliness within the Thermal Energy Plants and EWS mechanical asset locations.
Diligently adhere to all relevant environmental regulations.
Perform other duties related to the qualifications and requirements of the position.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Relative to duties described above failure to utilize due diligence and follow proper procedures while at work could have serious effects to Energy and Water Services mechanical systems. Must be able to make quick and accurate assessment of equipment failures to minimize equipment damage.

People and Process Manager, Thermal Plants (plant chief operating engineer), the assistant chief engineer, People and Process Manager Utilities Trades, and other EWS managers.

Minimum Qualifications
Red Seal or BCTQ Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) Certification. 3-5 years of related experience in an industrial setting. Valid B.C. Class 5 driver’s license. Competency in welding. Practical knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Knowledge of the safe utilization of power and hand tools. Demonstrated trouble shooting and problem solving skills. Ability to work in a team environment. Demonstrated ability to prioritize workload and effectively meet deadlines. Machining experience will be considered an asset. 4th Class Power Engineer Certificate is desirable.
