Mechanical Engineer - Innovation Centre
On-site
In 2015, Kal Tire opened the Innovation Centre here in British Columbia to give our research and development team a dedicated space to build and simulate the use of new tools that would change the landscape of mining tire operations. Kal Tire is an active investor in tire management innovation because we are committed to improving safety, productivity, and value in mining operations. With decades of expertise to leverage, we develop new technology, tools, and ways of working that are more efficient and protect our team members from risk. Our proprietary solutions mean that trucks spend more time in operation and team members can return home safely.
Reporting to the Manager, Innovation and R&D, the Mechanical Engineer will be joining the team at Kal Tire’s Innovation Centre here in Vernon. This position will actively contribute to ongoing as well as new projects/initiatives that impact Mining Tire Group on a global scale. The role focusses on the design and implementation of mechanical/electromechanical products that can be leveraged throughout Mining Tire Group (MTG). This is a full-time permanent position that requires the ideal candidate to be located in the Okanagan region as the role works on-site in Vernon, BC.
Core Responsibilities
Relationship Management
  • Maintain product and company reputation by complying with government regulations.
  • Provide necessary engineering-related information in response to questions and requests from both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Liaise with Kal Tire operated Equipment Centre to update engineering related material associated with tools/equipment for MTG.
  • Liaise with the patent office in Vancouver in order to comply with regulations and deadlines.
Project Management
  • Integrate/leverage the use of research, analytical, and conceptual planning skills with an emphasis on mathematical modelling and computer-aided design.
  • Utilize Solidworks when it comes to all new project designs.
  • Create an operation manual/spare part list for each tool that is developed.
  • Provide monthly status reports on current in-house projects and field tests.
  • Follow manufacturer’s instructions and established procedures; be able to coordinate and request special services if necessary.
  • Complete projects by training and providing knowledge to on-the-ground tire technicians all across Mining Tire Group.
  • Keep equipment operational by coordinating maintenance and repair services.
  • Manage new and ongoing projects by leveraging engineering principles and techniques.
  • Evaluating mechanical and electromechanical systems/products by designing and conducting research programs and by applying principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, hydraulics, as well as materials.
  • Responsible for managing projects within the parameters of the pre-determined budget and time schedule.
  • Comply with providing the necessary documentation to ensure that Kal Tire developed tools and equipment are certified to engineering standard.
  • Prepare product reports through collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.
  • Recommend modifications based on prototype test results.
Product Development
  • Investigate new tools and technologies available worldwide and how their application could improve operational efficiency.
  • Design and implement cost-effective equipment modifications to help improve safety and reliability.
  • Create commercial model templates for final users to test new models.
  • Ensure a product can be made reliably and will perform consistently in mining operating environments.
  • Review and test new commercial models and suggest innovative new ideas.
  • Develop, test, and evaluate theoretical designs.
Professional Development
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops.
  • Review professional publications, establish personal networks, and participate in various industry specific professional societies.
  • Stay up to date on industry trends globally.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Hands-on experience and willingness to work with equipment and tooling.
  • Previous involvement with the Engineering Certification process for tooling and equipment.
  • Able to work successfully both independently and collaboratively.
  • Good communication skills and aptitude for managing relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Critical thinking with exceptional problem-solving skills.
  • Strong fundamental knowledge of mechanical design and how it applies to automation industrial designs.
  • Demonstrated ability to efficiently plan and organize projects as well as tasks.
  • Previous experience working with Solidworks and Microsoft Office 365.
  • Advanced use of Excel and data bases such as Access.
  • Proficient research abilities.
  • Demonstrated strengths when working in a deadline oriented, high output environment.
Work Experience
  • 3-5 years in a comparable role within the Mechanical Engineering field.
  • Experience working internationally or collaborating with international entities/organizations is considered an asset.
EDUCATION
  • Bachelor’s Degree in the field of Mechanical Engineering from an accredited University or College. Equivalent combinations of education + experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to travel both domestically and internationally to different Mining Tire Group locations.
  • Substantial travel required (60% office work, 40% field work).
  • Ability to speak Spanish is considered an asset.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to comply with relevant insurance policies.
