Purpose of Role


To provide technical leadership in mechanical engineering; to develop and implement corporate policies, standards and specifications related to mechanical engineering. Contribute to the execution of the strategy for the engineering team, ensuring alignment with the organization’s overall strategy. Ensure quality standards are upheld in the field of specialization. To participate in medium to long-term business and / or project planning on key projects by providing technical and cross-functional expertise.


Job Responsibilities


  • Lead project teams – establishing project plans and milestones, analyzing risks, developing budgets and delegating work assignments.
  • Prepare business cases regarding projects and initiatives, analyze information and prepare technical documents to support decision making; present recommendations and status updates to key stakeholders.
  • Interface and coordinate with site operations teams.
  • Assist commercial teams with technical support in procurement related to mechanical procurement packages.
  • Contribute to the execution of strategies related to mechanical engineering to enhance current engineering team practices and performance.
  • Lead key technical projects requiring mechanical engineering input/oversight including defining and achieving project goals, anticipating and minimizing risks, project management, managing resources and consultants. Collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Take a coordination role in the construction and commissioning of mechanical systems.
  • Review project documents (policies, standards, specifications, drawings, data sheets) related to mechanical equipment and systems to assure they meet project objectives.
  • Oversee mechanical discipline activities on major greenfield and brownfield capital projects, including the oversight of 3rd party consultants.
  • Seek and implement opportunities to add value to the company’s project portfolio.
  • As Engineering Manager on selected projects, co-ordinate and direct work and of all engineering disciplines, often being the prime contact with the external engineering firm.
  • Lead the process of preparing corporate documents (policies, standards, specifications) related to mechanical engineering.


Minimum Qualifications & Skill Requirementse


  • Ability to work independently as well as part of large multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Experience with engineering management of medium sized projects. This includes development and management of scope of work, schedules, budget as well as co-ordination. Working with engineering consultants, vendors, contractors and other stakeholders.
  • Formal professional designation in mechanical engineering either in Ontario or with a pathway to attain licensing in Ontario.
  • Project management or operational experience is an asset.
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
  • 10+ years of related work experience.
  • Fluency in Portuguese, Spanish, or French is an asset.
  • Experience with mechanical engineering aspects of projects of varying scope and complexity from planning to commissioning stages.
  • Good understanding of mining and processing equipment. Experience with sizing, selection, engineering, construction and commissioning of relevant mechanical systems.
  • International experience.

  • Able to travel for frequent but short periods.
  • Adaptable to dynamic needs of the business.
  • Team player with a strong inclination towards developing co-operative solutions, especially in situations where one does not have direct authority.
  • Works well both in a corporate environment as well as on site in projects and operations.
