Job Description

The Whitby Public Library (WPL) is currently seeking a highly motivated and energetic individual to fill the position of Manager, Communications.


Position Summary

The successful candidate for this challenging full-time, exempt position will oversee marketing, public relations, advertising, digital strategy, and internal communications for WPL. This position offers the opportunity to work in a collaborative, growing and successful library system and play a leadership role in supporting our strategic priorities, mission, and vision.

The Manager, Communications will help to build awareness of our possibilities and to engage with our residents, staff, and stakeholders both in-person and virtually. The Manager will build a system-wide, team approach to internal and external communications, working to raise the Library’s profile in the community, improve library services, plan future enhancements, and strengthen the WPL’s ability to respond to diverse community needs. Responsibilities require judgement to create and implement services, programs, plans, and procedures.


Reporting Relationships

• Reports to the Director, Community and Service Development

• Manages, oversees, and leads all communication and marketing efforts, including the Library’s website/virtual branch

• Supervises CUPE-affiliated and exempt staff or contract employees as assigned

• Collaborates with managers and staff in other departments


Qualifications

Education

• Degree or diploma in public relations, communications, or related field.

Experience

• 2 years relevant experience • Experience working in a library, non-profit or public service setting is an asset, preferably supervising in a unionized environment


Salary and Conditions of Work

• $66,751-83,440 (2022 rate)

• Competitive benefits, including health, dental and pension plan

• Full-time, 35 hours per week • Hybrid and flexible work schedule

• May include evenings and weekends


Knowledge/Skill/Ability

• Strong customer – both internal and external - service focus and skills with experience serving a diverse population • Demonstrated ability to plan, develop, direct, and evaluate marketing and communications initiatives

• Superior communication skills including negotiation and persuasion, report writing, and facilitation skills

• Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to move initiatives and projects forward in a collaborative and effective manner

• Experience and confidence developing messages for all stakeholders, including Library Board and staff, residents, elected officials, and members of the media

• Supervisory experience and leadership skills with the ability to work with all personnel in a collaborative, committed and collegial setting, preferably within a unionized environment

• Superior interpersonal skills and the ability to influence others and build beneficial relationships with people at all levels inside and outside WPL

• Strong troubleshooting, problem identification and resolution skills. Initiative handling diverse interactions, questions, and situations

• Comprehensive knowledge of library resources and services

• The ability to work independently and self-motivate, set priorities and motivate team members

• Excellent technology skills with demonstrated ability to keep abreast of current trends, including an interest in exploring and experimenting with emerging technologies

• Experience managing change, flexibility, and a willingness to adapt to evolving objectives and priorities

• Excellent organizational skills with a demonstrated ability to manage a high volume of work, multiple priorities, and tight deadlines, with constant attention to detail

• Ability to think creatively and strategically with a system-wide approach, particularly when planning and directing strategic projects and initiatives
