Summary
The Manager, Alumni Career Education leads the development and execution of a multi-year strategy and plan to address the career development needs of UBC s 330,000 alumni. Ongoing professional development has been identified as part of the value proposition for UBC s large and diverse alumni body. As such, the Manager, Alumni Career Education will develop and conduct formal and informal needs assessments for career education and develop corresponding programming to address these needs. The incumbent will regularly evaluate the efficacy, relevance and overall success of offerings and make course corrections as necessary. The Manager, Alumni Career Education will design and deliver programs and services to support alumni learning and to promote alumni engagement in career development activities as part of the alumni UBC Engagement Framework. The incumbent will seek out strategic relationships with outside contractors to develop and deliver content as needed, including negotiating contracts. The Manager, Alumni Career Education develops and maintains relationships with internal and external stakeholders including Alumni Engagement Managers in each faculty, the Alumni Engagement office in the Okanagan and Hong Kong as well as other UBC career offices.
Organizational Status
Alumni UBC seeks to engage 70,000+ alumni with UBC on an annual basis. Career development programming is one of the main pillars of our strategic framework with goals set for participation until 2022. This role reports to the Director, Operations and Planning. Works in collaboration with UBC faculties and departments, Centre for Student Involvement and Careers, Continuing Studies, Sauder Career Centre and others as appropriate.
Work Performed
Strategy and Planning:
  • Develops innovative long-term strategies, short-term tactical goals, and comprehensive plans for expanding and strengthening the alumni UBC Career Development Program.
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with other career practitioners across campus, finding ways to work together and create efficiencies between the various departments.
  • Plans and develops structured learning modules for alumni at varying stages of their careers to be delivered in workshops, structured programming and on-line.
Career Education Program Development:
  • Identifies and cultivates relationships with subject matter experts to produce workshops, blogs, and webinars and oversees their contributions to ensure quality and timeliness of outputs.
  • Researching external programs and pedagogical technologies/tools that could enhance the effectiveness of new programming.
  • Conducts needs assessment through identifying the career development needs of alumni and assessing potential participant groups.
  • Develops evaluation tools to assess the effectiveness of educational modules and overall programming.
  • Seeks strategic internal and external partnerships in program delivery, including outside contractors as needed.
  • Integrates established and emerging educational methodologies and tools into curriculum development to incorporate best-in-class content and methodologies in educational programming.
Educational Program Operations:
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Monitor and evaluate program success and challenges and recommend program modifications to Director.
  • Prepares quarterly reports on program activities, spending and outputs including submitting alumni engagement points for both volunteers and participants.
  • Oversees the operation of the alumni UBC Career Development Program including establishing and managing budgets and developing revenue models.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Consequences of decisions can affect future career management and may affect employment outcomes for alumni. Ineffective recruitment advice would have a serious negative impact on relationships with UBC alumni, faculty and departments, and employers. Dissatisfied alumni would contribute to poor public relations for the University, which in turn would have a negative effect on the University s ability to raise funds and recruit outstanding prospective students.
Supervision Received
The incumbent acts independently without direct supervision but within general guidelines. The incumbent makes decisions that will impact the design of the alumni career development program.
Supervision Given
Manages professional and student staff and is responsible for hiring, discipline, evaluation and termination. Oversees contractors and evaluates relationship against goals and priorities.
Preferred Qualifications
Master s degree in Education.Master s degree in a related discipline.Minimum of six years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.Experience in career services, university/college student affairs, human resources, business or related field preferred. Experience working with faculty, students and staff in a post-secondary institution desirable. Experience advising and instructing clients on a variety of career development and work search issues such as career exploration, resumes, networking, interviews, labor market information etc. Experience creating and delivering career and work search instructional workshops. Experience in using web-based platforms and instructional technology to teach and engage constituents in career development issues required. Strong presentation and public speaking skills. Proven competence in planning and conducting programs and special events. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Experience leading and participating in projects involving multiple stakeholders. Strong time management and organizational skills. Excellent computer skills - proficient in full suite of MS Office tools. Experience with social software and networking applications such as blogs, podcasts, wiki s, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn google docs etc, are assets. Certification in MBTI, True Colours, StrengthFinder, or other human capital assessment tools is an asset. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and to work effectively with all levels of University personnel. Some evening and weekend work required.
