Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:


As a Makerspace Technician at ROM, you'll inspire our learners to learn by building things in virtual and physical spaces. We believe in experiential problem-solving and making learning fun through hands-on activities that encourage creative problem-solving, deepen personal appreciation and interpretation of objects worldwide, and promote digital literacy through 3D printing, coding, and digital storytelling. We're looking for a candidate who has a passion for teaching in a digital space, a positive attitude and enjoys working in a collaborative team environment.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


As a Makerspace Technician, you'll have the following responsibilities:


  • Connect with ROM's collections through experiential, hands-on activities.
  • Set up, operate, and maintain safe ROM Makerspace equipment and tools operations.
  • Train staff to use the equipment and tools, provide ongoing technical support and enforce guidelines for staff’s safe shared use of the space.
  • Deepen personal appreciation and interpretation of objects worldwide through arts-based processes.
  • Maintain current knowledge of developments, trends, and issues in the maker community that would benefit the ROM Makerspace and enhance the learning environment.
  • Foster creative problem-solving through design challenges focused on themes and topics at the Museum.
  • Cultivate digital literacy through 3D printing, coding, and digital storytelling.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Assist with research to support developing and evaluating creative learning activities and programs related to the ROM Makerspace.
  • Perform routine equipment checks to identify technical issues and do repairs to ensure the equipment is in good working order.
  • Maintain an inventory of equipment, tools, and consumables, and order materials and supplies for programming.
  • Provide technical assistance and instruction to students and teachers during school visits.
  • Contribute to developing and evaluating creative learning activities and programs related to the ROM Makerspace.

QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Demonstrated experience working with students and teachers in a diverse and inclusive formal or informal learning environment and supporting maker activities that promote design thinking, collaborative learning, and problem-based learning.
  • Oral and written fluency in French would be an asset.
  • Experience installing, operating, and performing routine repair and maintenance of digital fabrication equipment, audio-visual equipment, computers and tablets, and artmaking equipment in an educational setting.
  • Completion of two (2) years of post-secondary training/education specializing in New Media, Design, and Visual Arts or a related program of study or an acceptable equivalent in education and experience.
  • Working proficiency in multimedia production software, including Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro), 3D modelling tools, and essential game-making platforms. Working knowledge of computer programming and coding.
  • Must have completed at least one (1) year of work experience with digital fabrication equipment and maker tools, computers, tablets, audio-visual equipment, and artmaking processes.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong organizational and time management skills, and strong interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with various roles at all levels.


Salary and Terms of Employment


START DATE: ASAP


EMPLOYEE GROUP: OPSEU Part-time Local 543 – Part-time


SALARY/HOURLY RATE: $24.96 – 28.53 per hour


SCHEDULE: up to 24 hours


PROBATIONARY PERIOD: 420 hours or six (6) months (whichever comes first)
