Position Summary:

Reporting to the Sr. Plant Manager, the Engineering & Maintenance Manager is accountable for planning, organizing, directing, and coordination of all engineering and maintenance activities, capital projects, facility maintenance, utility management, contractor selection and management and budget planning and management.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Engineering:

  • Creation and management of CAD drawings of the facility and surrounding grounds to accurately represent current facility layout. Modeling of future projects into current facility layout to assist affected departments in development and acceptance.
  • Develop and build a 3-year capital plan for Toronto facility.
  • Functions as project manager during the development, installation and startup of capital projects. Responsible for planning, scheduling, coordination, implementation, reports, records and completion of each project.
  • Engineer the removal, installation and location of all equipment and machinery. Responsible for all installations and upgrades to meet all electrical, plumbing, mechanical and safety requirements. Test newly installed equipment to insure it meets specifications as stated in Success Criteria.
  • Engineer and manage capital projects including construction projects, to adhere to company capital schedules, budgets and time frame. Facilitator/author of Success Criteria development and implementation. Responsible for monthly and other reports on status of capital projects. Responsible for all capital project recordkeeping.
  • Reviews all bids and proposals, then selects and/or makes recommendations of contractor, vendors and equipment. Represent the company when dealing with outside contractors and vendors.


Maintenance

The implementation and maintenance of equipment and systems to assure that product is manufactured in a safe and sanitary manner, with trained personnel and defined systems, on time and within specific ranges, including:

  • Develop and implement plans/programs to improve knowledge and training of all facility maintenance personnel. Maintains rigorous standards for each position in the maintenance function and holds staff responsible for achieving & maintaining those standards including safety.
  • Identification & prioritizing major (chronic) maintenance issues with production and to initiate and develop action plans to resolve issues.
  • Develops, authors and maintains an effective maintenance library of SOP's, vendor manuals, process flows, and other documentation required for key maintenance activities and equipment. These documents are reviewed and/or edited annually.
  • Implement the maintenance management tool for the control and planning of hours worked, work orders, spare parts requisition, and auxiliary materials for the execution of services.
  • Effectively uses all maintenance systems/software to manage core maintenance transactions. Works to keep system documentation current and implements any value-added changes as needed. Develops and distributes cost analysis documentation for budgetary control.
  • Monitoring the plants maintenance program with specific emphasis on preventive maintenance and failure analysis.


Establishment and communication of goals and objectives to the Maintenance Team and personnel to address overall plant efficiency, mechanical downtime reduction, and cost reduction opportunities.

  • Manage department's labor relations through the application of consistent practices while addressing employee grievances, hire / discharge practices, and contractual requirements.
  • Conduct performance evaluations of the Maintenance team and implement appropriate training programs to address developmental needs and further career development of same.
  • Monitor performance of maintenance team and develop programs to continuously improve Preventive / Reactive ratio and troubleshooting techniques.


Assisting the Director of Operations, Operations Manager, Finance, etc in the development of a viable Maintenance / Engineering Budget by:

  • Establish & maintain positive and productive working relationships with production and all support groups.
  • Implement programs to ensure compliance to SOP's, GMP’s, HSE, plant sanitation and product quality expectations.
  • Track and manage the maintenance budget.
  • Manage activities of contracted companies/employees, provides support and training as needed to perform duties in an acceptable manner for Ventura Foods, LLC. Maintains rigorous standards for each contractor and holds contractors’ staff responsible for achieving & maintaining those standards including safety. Monitors the performance of all outside vendors with respect to time, scope and cost.
  • Development and implementation of Utility Management Programs, including the monitoring of usage, reduction of usage via efficiency, Utility Audits, and resourcing waste streams utilizing recycling centers/outlets.
  • Tracking and controlling cost of equipment repair and modifications.
  • Assist in special and hazardous waste disposal, wastewater monitoring and other environmental activities in collaboration with the Environmental Specialist
  • Managing and directing the activities of the maintenance budget, including monitoring and reporting all variances to plan.
  • Represent the company’s position and interest effectively in dealing with outside contractors, vendors and outside engineering or consultants.
  • Implement program to ensure compliance to MOL, ESA, MOE, & TSSA.
  • The implementation and maintenance of equipment and systems to assure that product is manufactured in a safe and sanitary manner, with trained personnel and defined systems, on time and within specific ranges, including:
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications and Experience :

  • Demonstrated abilities in analytics, problem solving and team building
  • Demonstrated ability to improve parts management and purchasing
  • In-depth knowledge of plant operation with the ability to recognize mechanical, electrical and structural problems
  • Excellent computer skills in up-to-date software for reports, and technical documentation
  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work effectively with colleagues at all levels of the organization
  • Excellent communication (verbal & written), coaching, and leadership skills in a team-based environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication/presentation skills
  • 5+ years of maintenance and engineering experience in a managerial role
  • Demonstrated ability to make major and rapid changes to a strong legacy organization
  • Effective interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Strong operational & manufacturing experience in CPG industry with experience in TPM, 5s, LEAN, 6 sigma tools and concepts, Safety & GMP standards
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering
  • Highly action oriented, drive for results, innovative, challenging actual set-ups, entrepreneurial ability
  • Strategic thinking, while having ability to excel in leading tactical programs
