Job Description
Join a Challenger
Being a traditional bank just isn’t our thing. We are big believers in innovating the banking experience because we believe Canadians deserve better options, and we challenge ourselves and our teams to creatively transform what’s possible in banking. Our team is made up of inquisitive and agile minds that find smarter ways of doing things. If you’re not afraid of taking on big challenges and redefining the future, you belong with us. You’ll get to work with people who will encourage you to reach new heights. We like to keep things fun, ask questions and learn together.
We are a big (and growing!) family. Overall we serve more than 370,000 people across Canada through Equitable Bank, Canada's Challenger Bank™, and have been around for more than 50 years. Equitable Bank's wholly-owned subsidiary, Concentra Bank, supports credit unions across Canada that serve more than 5 million members. Together we have over $100 billion in combined assets under management and administration, with a clear mandate to drive change in Canadian banking to enrich people's lives. Our EQ Bank platform ( eqbank.ca ) has been named the top Schedule I Bank in Canada on the Forbes World's Best Banks 2023, 2022, and 2021 lists.
Leadership Development Program
Equitable Bank has an opportunity for 4 - 6 Associates to join our Rotational Leadership Development Program beginning September 2024.
The Rotational Leadership Development Program is a two-year program that provides the unique opportunity to gain exposure in six different areas of operations at Equitable Bank. This program offers participants the opportunity to learn key skills in credit within the Commercial Mortgage Department, experience in Personal Banking Strategy, and behind the scenes marketing analysis and technology within Digital Banking.
This Program Is Also Designed To Allow Our Associates The Opportunity To Explore Their Choice Of Three Elective Business Units Which Include a Selection From
  • Finance
  • Internal Audit
  • Investor Relations (IR)
  • Enterprise Risk Management (ERM)
  • Corporate Development and Corporate Strategy
  • Reverse Mortgage Strategy (REM)
Rotations Overview
The following is a brief overview of each rotation that includes only some of the functions you will participate in but is not inclusive of all.
In Commercial Mortgage Credit you will partake in credit analysis, with an understanding of the near prime and prime financial markets. As an underwriter, you look at credit reports, property appraisals, third party reports and make decisions on whether to recommend a loan for approval. There will be networking with brokers and other external business partners along with various staff within the Commercial Lending group. You will have the opportunity to work on your own deals, seek approvals, and gain insight on the commercial and multi-residential real estate markets.
In Personal Banking Strategy, you will support the development and execution of the Personal Banking group’s strategy across both Lending (Single Family Residential, REM, Insurance Lending) and Digital Banking (EQ Bank). You will have the opportunity to start developing a cohesive strategic toolkit, and play a key role in: 1) Conducting market research to support business unit strategy (e.g. competitive positioning, product assessments, market sizing, industry trends), 2) Supporting the analysis and business casing for new opportunities and strategic initiatives, 3) Developing executive level presentations for the Bank’s C-Suite and Board of Directors, and 4) Creating mission critical reporting and dashboards using Tableau and SQL (we’ll teach you how!). The team is invested in your success and takes your development seriously. We have a structured training and onboarding plan to support your development and ownership of key initiatives as the rotation progresses (dependent on business needs and always with help and support of senior team members). If you have an interest in defining the future of banking, this is the right role for you.
In Digital Banking, you will be working in either the Customer Experience, Analytics & Insights, or Payments team based on business needs . In Customer Experience, you can expect to be thinking about how we can better serve our customers as a bank via our online banking platform, mobile app and other touchpoints, such as the call centre. This may involve doing customer research, customer journey mapping and competitive scans to find opportunities for improvements or new offerings. You’ll be involved in Design Thinking workshops (EQBations) with participants across Digital Banking functions. You may then assist in the evaluation of these opportunities both qualitatively through user testing research, as well as quantitatively through surveys and light financial modeling.
On the Analytics & Insights Team, you will work on high impact business problems, ranging from investigative analysis to predictive solutions across different business verticals of marketing, call center, mortgage business & Fraud. This will enable you to develop your data analytical skills to get to actionable insights, and then work with cross-functional team to implement your recommendations.
On the Payments team, you will work on developing the Digital Payments strategy. A key component of this will involve understanding the Global / Canadian trends and its impact on Canadian payment landscape. You will work on putting together competitive landscape benchmarking, understanding innovations across markets in digital payments and providing qualitative & quantitative input supporting the business case for new product rollouts.
Under the broader umbrella of Finance, we have Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A).Within the FP&A team, you will be involved in preparing management reporting and analysis related to portfolio performance and financial results; executive committee and board meeting presentations; MD&A commentary for quarterly and annual reports; and conduct financial modelling and analysis, largely related to the budget and forecast process.
In the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) rotation you will review what market risk, credit risk and operational risk are and how they affect the financial markets. There may be opportunities in financial modelling and coding as well.
In the Investor Relations team, you will assist with the preparation of quarterly Investor Relations deliverables including: Competitive Overview report (performance benchmarking against peer banks), consensus Analyst models & post-quarter Analyst reaction summary, and investor marketing presentation. You will also analyze changes in institutional share ownership, short-interest positions and trading volumes of EQB shares, and assist the CFO, Corporate Development and Finance teams, where required, in preparation of Board / Audit Committee deliverables.
Internal Audit assesses the Bank’s risk management process, governance, and internal control procedures. It provides insight into the bank’s overall business and recommends solutions for achieving operational effectiveness.
In Reverse Mortgage Strategy (REM Strategy), you will help the team grow one of two decumulation stage products we offer. This may involve competitive landscape assessment, underwriting tool updates, market expansion, product innovations, and channel growth. If you’re looking for a growing and entrepreneurial team, where you can combine strategy and product execution, this may be the role for you.
