Java Spring Technical Lead

Our client is looking to hire a Java Technical Lead for a full-time permanent position in Toronto or Ottawa.

The work model is hybrid with 2 days onsite as of September.

Why is this role important?

Under the direction of the Manager, ITSPD, the Technical Lead is responsible for the delivery, maintenance, support, and enhancement of secure and effective technical solutions in their assigned portfolios. The Technical Lead participates in requirements identification and feasibility analysis for new solutions or application modifications in accordance with the formal Change Management process, is responsible for the generation of technical solutions to include design, coding, testing, quality assurance, implementation and all supporting documentation. The Technical Lead serves as the primary contact between the product owners and business users, and the team for the day-to-day maintenance, support and enhancements in their assigned portfolios.

What you'll do

1. Leads the delivery, maintenance, support and enhancement of secure and effective technical solutions for products and projects in assigned portfolio, including design, coding, testing, quality assurance, implementation and all supporting documentation.

2. Provides leadership and guidance to assigned staff. Supervises, coaches, allocates and monitors work, workload and performance of staff to ensure that quality of technical solutions is maintained and that learning opportunities are provided. Conduct annual performance reviews for assigned staff and provide regular feedback on performance.

3. Develops and demonstrate a thorough understanding of ITS systems development standards and methodologies, tools and techniques, and its underlying quality assurance principles and processes. Maintains current knowledge of industry best practices and future direction, and shares findings with other ITS teams.

4. Demonstrates and maintains a thorough understanding and knowledge of company policies that form the basis to existing business processes. Contributes to policy evolution and refinement and business and process re-engineering.

5. Liaises with business areas to manage scope, deliverables and other matters related to projects and products in assigned portfolio to ensure that users’ needs are being addressed.

6. Interacts closely with other ITS teams to ensure successful system development according to the detailed specifications and industry best practices within architectural frameworks; engaging the Architecture and Standards team to ensure solutions are designed according to the ITS systems development standards and methodologies and in alignment with ITS architectural frameworks.

7. Work with assigned ITS project team and project manager and provide leadership to other ITS staff in the development of system designs and automated information flows/processes based on user requirements and specifications for system implementations, enhancements and/or customizations. As required, develop and oversee quality assurance strategies and protocols for user acceptance and implementation of new and enhanced systems/applications.

8. Work with assigned staff to ensure they receive the requisite information to perform their assigned tasks, and coordinate and ensure timely delivery of these assigned tasks.

What you'll bring to the table

• University degree or equivalent experience/education in Computer Science, Mathematics or related discipline.

• Minimum of five years of IT experience in defining and overseeing the generation and implementation of technical solutions for large, complex, multi-tiered applications in a web-based environment, four or more years of which are in a senior technical position.

• Extensive experience and proven expertise in the development of web-based middle tier, back end and front-end development.

• Proven experience with Java 8/11, Spring Framework, Javascript and front-end frameworks, SQL, MyBatis, HTML, XML, UNIX Shell, Oracle, Tomcat, Apache Server, Git, Maven, CICD.

• Experience with authentication and authorization, standards, frameworks and tools (e.g. LDAP, SAML, OAuth) is an asset.

• Experience with Python and AWS an asset.

• Strong design and documentation skills making use of UML, Use Case Tools, Enterprise Architect.

• Demonstrated experience with formal system development methodologies and standards.

• Extensive experience in a senior technical role with the ability to supervise and coach staff.

• Ability to understand and prioritize user and business requirements and to conceptualize information processing solutions in response to them.

• Ability to analyze scope and define work effort required. Ability to plan and manage workload effectively.

• Strong team player with a client/user orientation.

• Excellent interpersonal skills, verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex ideas/processes in simple terminology.

• Fluency in both official languages is an asset.
