The Opportunity

Our client is seeking a highly experienced and results-driven Senior Finance Manager with a CPA designation to join their Finance department. Reporting directly to the Director of Finance, you will play a pivotal role in overseeing payroll operations and providing support in preparing year-end financial statements and audits. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in finance and accounting, demonstrating expertise in financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.

Responsibilities:

1. Lead and mentor a team of three Payroll Administrators, ensuring accurate processing of multiple monthly payrolls for 1,500 union and non-union salaried and hourly rate employees.
2. Ensure compliance with Black Gold School Division board policies, government regulations, and collective agreements by reviewing and approving final monthly payrolls.
3. Oversee the completion of annual WCB returns and manage the annual T4 and T4A processes.
4. Collaborate with external auditors appointed by the Board during the annual audit, assisting in the preparation of year-end working papers, schedules, and notes.
5. Analyze previous year expenditures to contribute to the Division's budget development, recommending changes to budgeted amounts.
6. Create budgets, monthly financial reports, and projections for various instructional departments.
7. Analyze and record Alberta Education funding on a monthly basis, including coordination of all Alberta Education grants and student counts.
8. Prepare accurate financial government reports for grant funding, ensuring timely submission.
9. Fulfill monthly reporting requirements to Alberta Education.
10. Conduct monthly bank statement reconciliations.
11. Support the implementation or upgrade of accounting or payroll software.
12. Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Finance.

Qualifications:

1. CPA designation is required.
2. Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in accounting and finance roles, including payroll, financial reporting, analysis, and budgeting.
3. Supervisory experience is essential.
4. Proven ability to lead a team and foster positive working relationships.
5. Knowledge of audit, control, and reconciliation procedures, with a track record of applying internal controls in a business environment.
6. Proficiency in Windows and Google environments, with strong data analysis skills, including advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel tools, formulas, and formatting.
7. Ability to effectively prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, allocate resources, and manage competing priorities in a dynamic, growing environment.
8. Commitment to accuracy with exceptional attention to detail in processing detailed information consistently and meticulously.
9. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment characterized by cooperation, respect, and integrity.
10. Excellent interpersonal, communication, analytical, time management, and organizational skills.
11. Previous work experience in a School Division would be considered an asset.
