Job Title:SNAP Family and Child Worker

Summary:


SNAP®(STOP NOW AND PLAN),is an evidence-based, cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) model, developed at the Child Development Institute (CDI). The SNAP model teaches children and their parents’ skills, to effectively manage their emotions and behaviours. The goals of SNAP are to support children to understand their innate abilities, competencies, autonomy as well as their shortcomings; to reduce their involvement in conflict with family, peers and authority figures. Under the direction of the SNAP® Program Manager, the SNAP® Child and Family Worker (FCWs) will work with parents and their children to identify, and assess barriers and hardships that is impacting their lives, and provide support in the form of advocacy, case management, counseling, group facilitation, mentorship, collaboration with other service providers etc.


Successful candidates will be required to work flexible hours, including at minimum 2 evenings per week.In addition, they are required to connect with clients in locations that are more accessible to clients (i.e. the clients’ home, in community, in the school environment etc.). An interest in evidence-based programming and working within a culturally appropriate practice is essential. The Britannia Woods SNAP® program is a culturally adapted program for Black children, youth, and their families.Thus, the successful candidate is expected to practice from an Anti-oppressive lens and understands the lived realties of this community.

Britannia Woods SNAP® is currently looking for strong candidates who speak French and/or other relevant languages within the diverse Ottawa Black Community.


Key Responsibilities

  • Appropriate use of community resources
  • Implements SNAP therapeutic model guided by CBT framework and incorporate additional
  • Provide long term case management and care coordination support for clients
  • Actively participates and makes use of on-going clinical supervision
  • Prerequisites
  • Support clients in navigating society social systems / health systems
  • To other organizations and community stakeholders as needed
  • Liaise, consults, and collaborates with community stakeholders (e.g., schools) and makes
  • Provide Individual, family and group crisis counselling support to individual & families
  • Works flexible hours to meet the needs of clients -Including evenings
  • Develop support plans, and explore goals in conjunction with the family needs
  • Assesses and identify children and their family strengths and needs, according to program
  • Provide group facilitation/mentorship support
  • Assumes other responsibilities as assigned from Mental Health Manager
  • Follows program guidelines regarding (confidentiality, casenotes, reports, record keeping etc.)
  • Represent agency in a positive manner, promotes public relations by highlighting agency’s services
  • Act as an advocate within the school & child welfare systems
  • Therapeutic modalities as required
  • Participates in quality assurance, service evaluation, data collection and research activities
  • Carries out discharge planning and service evaluation with families
  • Participates in recruitment strategies


Qualifications

  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle is mandatory.
  • Strong computer proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook), and other databases
  • Other languages; Arabic, Lingala, Creoleor other languages commonly spoken among Black communities in Ottawa will be considered an asset
  • Knowledge and experience working with racialized children and adolescents who experience issues of poverty, discrimination, issues in the education system and face other societal barriers
  • Ability to speak French or Somali is a strong asset
  • 2-3 years’ experience working with disadvantaged, vulnerable or at-risk clients in a community setting
  • A minimum of 2-3 years’ experience working with children/adult with mental health /behavioral & emotional issues
  • Knowledge of, and or lived experience of the black communities In Ottawa is an asset
  • Experience with developing and facilitating groups focusing on mental health, emotional issues and other behavioural issues
  • Bachelor of Social Work / Social Services Worker diploma / Degree in other social sciences (ie. counselling)
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and documentation skills
  • Must be a member in good standing with a regulated college as per current standards, for practicing social work, or psychotherapy (i.e. CRPO, OCSWSSW)
