Child and Family Specialist


Nankind is a not-for-profit organization that provides free childcare for parents with cancer. We believe that parents should not have to choose between their own health and caring for their children. We also believe that children should not have to experience parental cancer including death due to cancer without trained guidance and support. Our mission is to lessen the impact of cancer on families through a network of specially trained volunteer Angels providing in-home and virtual services. Nankind provides a multidisciplinary team approach to provide the best service possible to our families in a community setting. Our programs are child-life informed and supported by Nankind’s experienced team that includes Child Life Specialists and Social Workers. Our cancer-care supportive services help families cope with the stress of a cancer diagnosis, loss, and bereavement in the Greater Toronto area, Kingston, Barrie and Hamilton. Utilizing Nankind’s 5-step process built on over 30 years of experience and inspired by Child Life gives our families peace of mind that their children will be all right


Job description • Develop strategic relationships and partnerships with Cancer Centers, Social Workers, and community resources to ensure client referrals. Provides families with a volunteer match using our Nankind matching process • Provides parents and children with psycho-social support during a parental cancer journey • Initial Contact with referral/client. Present Nankind program to client • Conduct client intakes • Conduct initial assessment with families entering Nankind service • Provide volunteers with support throughout the course of service • Manage the ongoing relationship between the family and the volunteer • Maintains client database • Records all contacts and correspondence with volunteers, families, and referral sources • Contacts families monthly to update client health status and support • Provides feedback summaries to the team regarding client updates and volunteer feedback • Maintains waitlist and engagement with families • Creates Coping Kits and other collateral • Collects updated documents from families • Manages special programs • Creates reports from stats on volunteer visits, hours and client’s numbers, waitlist, etc • Supervises Interns and other students as required • Work collaboratively with Marketing, Volunteer recruitment to promote Nankind services Education and Experience • Minimum Bachelor of Social Work with good standing at the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers OR Master’s in Child Life and Pediatric Psychosocial Care and Certified as a Child Life Specialist • Experience in a medical or hospital setting is an asset • Experience in childhood trauma is required • Certification in Grief & Bereavement is preferred • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite • Experience with Client management systems, Client Tracking preferred Job Type: Full-time, Permanent – Employees work a Four-day work week to support a healthy work-life balance. Must Drive and have a vehicle, Hybrid position between North York and Hamilton. Salary: $60,000 per year
