Job Description

THE ORGANIZATION

Hope Air is Canada’s only national charity providing free airline travel accommodations, meals, and ground transportation programs for Canadians in financial need, who must travel for medical care far from home. Long distance medical travel can be a material barrier that prevents patients from timely access to diagnosis and treatment for a variety of health conditions. The promise of Hope Air is that “no patients will be left behind”, regardless of location or financial means.

As a result of Hope Air support, thousands of Canadians each year reach medical care rather than being forced to postpone or cancel medical treatments due to financial constraints. Hope Air’s programs keep remote, rural, and smaller communities strong, enabling Canadians to continue to live where they choose, regardless of limited access to specialized medical care.

Since its founding in 1986, more than 170,000 travel arrangements have been facilitated, including over 10,000 travel arrangements in 2022. Without Hope Air, 69% of patients said that they would not be cured and 94% indicate that they had a better health outcome because of Hope Air support. Hope Air works with a broad group of partners and supporters including airlines, airport authorities, volunteers, hotels, provincial governments, local and regional health care providers and corporate, foundation and individual donors. THE OPPORTUNITY

Hope Air is a high performing national charity with a mission that has undeniable appeal. For the right leader, this is a unique and wonderful opportunity to have a positive impact on the lives of Canadians who struggle to access the healthcare they need.

Hope Air has been delivering services to British Columbians for over 20 years. Historically, over 50% of all Hope Air patient services have been delivered in the province. Due to ongoing expansion and growth of Hope Air programs and services in British Columbia, a new Executor Director role is being created to lead and manage at this exciting time.

The Executive Director will lead and evolve internal and external operational practices to achieve managed growth in British Columbia. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Executive Director will work closely with the CEO and Senior Leadership Team (SLT), staff, and volunteers to support the strategic priorities of the organization, that provides air travel accommodations, meals, and ground transportation programs for residents of BC in financial need. The Executive Director also leads the continued efforts to grow awareness of Hope Air programs within the province focused on patients, rural and remote communities, health care providers, provincial and regional health care authorities, government(s) and other key stakeholders and partners.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work closely with Finance/Operations to ensure accurate financial and related reporting.
  • Act as a senior management representative to service partners, centres of influence, and with representatives from all levels of government in British Columbia.
  • Identify and manage the risks associated with achieving process and objectives, in coordination with the SLT, relating to effective risk management strategies/internal controls and monitoring activities to ensure they are operating as intended.
  • Guide operations to ensure compliance with government and other regulatory guidelines and laws.
  • Network within the health care, charitable, airline, airport and accommodation communities to be aware of all current and developing marketplace trends, and to identify new partnership opportunities for Hope Air across our diverse programs and services.
  • Act as a key Hope Air ambassador and spokesperson at events, including presenting to groups to both increase the awareness of Hope Air’s programs.
  • Take actions to inspire and promote great patient, and partner relationships, and an extraordinary overall experience by providing value-add knowledge and advice, and offer simplicity in processes.
  • Work with the CEO and the SLT to set the annual operating budget, and plan, organize, direct, and oversee program delivery within the province.
  • Strengthen and lead with excellence the charity’s performance, reputation and stakeholder relationships within the province.
  • Seek synergies and best practices to develop and implement new methods to improve patient and partner experience, productivity and efficiency in a growth environment.

Leadership

  • Communicate a clear vision and expectations for the British Columbia region and enable performance and results. Provide leadership and guidance to support staff in achieving initiatives and measures, identify areas for innovation and enhancement to Hope Air’s partner and employee experience, and sustain an engaged, high performing work environment.
  • Ensure all Hope Air volunteers within the Province are well trained, utilized and recognized.
  • Lead by example and regarded by all stakeholders as a committed champion for the mission of Hope Air.
  • Work collaboratively with Hope Air SLT, Board of Directors and Advisory Council members to advance the impact of the charity.
  • Provide motivation, mentorship, coaching, training, performance management, and development opportunities to all direct reports. This includes providing the necessary tools and resources to do their job.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, with the ability to convey messages to diverse audiences across the organization and external stakeholders.
  • Approachable, transparent and seeks input from others.
  • Proven leadership experience with the ability to partner and work across a diverse stakeholder group.
  • Experience working in or with charitable organizations.
  • Open to new ideas and innovation; combines a spirit of “what’s possible” with an appetite for calculated risk.
  • Client-centred and empathetic.
  • Experience in the provincial health care system is an asset.
  • A passion for the mission of Hope Air and our strategic goals of Better Health; Reduced Poverty, Strong Communities.
  • Familiarity with the unique challenges of patients living in low-income or poverty, especially for families and individuals living in rural and remote communities is an asset.
  • The ability to collaboratively develop, communicate, and implement strategies.
  • A good communicator and presenter.

EDUCATION/PROFESSIONAL ACCREDITATIONS

  • A Bachelor’s degree is preferred, but an equivalent combination of education, training, and years of experience will be considered.
