Job Summary
The HSE Manager leads a team that supports the continuous improvement of the companies’ culture. This dedicated leader will provide a mix of tactical and strategic level Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) leadership to all internal SGIC Teams and effectively implement HSE-based programs. This role will participate in the development of HSE policies and best practices, and provide services supporting all SGIC stakeholders. This role will also ensure compliance with our internal HSE program and how it relates to the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Environmental Protection Act (EPA), policies, codes and legislation, and anticipates changes to ensure the company is at the leading edge in its outlook towards Environment, Health and Safety. The ideal candidate for this role has experience working between field staff and senior management team, while building strong and trusting relationships with the group.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and support internal and external committees.
- Conduct inspections to ensure compliance with government and other agency regulatory requirements.
- Manage insurance claims and tracking financial impacts.
- Oversee the resourcing and optimization of qualified personnel and to develop and implement the company HSE management plan.
- Represents the team and the company on external task forces, partner working groups and with regulators and/or with the public and local/provincial authorities in the event of an incident
- Act as a resource to our field staff regarding HSE concerns and issues.
- Assist with WCB claims and modified work programs.
- Oversee and complete incident reports and assist with investigations.
- Complete all documentation and company reporting as required.
·Provide support and guidanceto a team of health, safety, and environmental coordinators.
·Provide monthly performance reports with transparency and assurance of trends and concerns to the senior management team
·Assist in pre-employment D&A testing.
·Enforce compliance with legislation, policies, and best practices.
·Oversee the development of in-house training such as Confined Space, Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG), Orientation, WHMIS, etc.
·Investigate incidents and near misses while ensuring proper follow up, communication and implementation of corrective actions.
·Responsible for conducting health, safety and environmental orientations (for employees and sub-contractors).
·Monitor employees and subcontractors on site for compliance to safety procedures, regulatory
requirements, and management system elements
- Provide coaching and support on health, safety and environmental requirements to the project managers, supervisors, foremen and workers related to HSE
Requirements
·10+ years of progressive experience in HSE roles or operations-based experience with HSE focus in the construction industry
·Ability to travel to support operational needs, conduct site visits, etc.
·Must be a team leader who leads by example
·Strong organizational and time management skills
·Teambuilding both functional and with key stakeholders
·Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities – able to create response action plans
- Must have strong communication skills and ability to relate to all levels of the organization
·Post-secondary education – Diploma or Degree in a program relating to safety preferred, CRSP or NCSO designation a definite asset
·Working knowledge of HSE regulations required
·Strong computer and software skills, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and email programs
·Technical knowledge of the industry
- Five to seven years of practical health, safety and environment experience – onsite expertise on large scale
- Construction sites and projects construction environment required
·Knowledge of COR requirements, driver training programs, transportation sector
- Exceptional interpersonal abilities and solid communication skills are necessary
- Ability to influence others to follow safety practices, procedures, and regulations
- Ability to meet deadlines under pressure
- Solid organizational and planning skills with ability to delegate or escalate to management when
required

Working Conditions
- Travel as required
- A portion of work is performed in an indoor setting, which includes standing, walking, and sitting. Sitting for extended periods of time is required.
- A portion of the work requires driving to various job sites, which may include sitting for extended periods of time, maintaining unhindered focus on the road and driving all types of conditions and weather. Must comply with all driving laws and company vehicle use policies.
- Use of sunscreen, long sleeves, and appropriate headgear when working outdoors
- Use of personal protection equipment is required
- A portion of work is performed in an outdoor setting, which could include hot, cold, wet, or dry weather.
