Position Overview


Start Date: September 5, 2023


Preferred Work Term Length: 12 or 16 months


Preferred Education: 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year Bachelor’s Degree in Environment Science, Health & Safety, Commerce, Statistics, Engineering, Business Administration, Accounting, or Business Analysis.


Eligibility: Students must be enrolled in a formal co-op/internship program with their post-secondary institution OR Students must be returning to their post-secondary institution after this work term

The Role


We’re seeking a Health, Safety & Environment Co-op Student to join our Health, Safety & Environment, North America team. Reporting to the VP-HSE, North America, you´ll be working with a team of dedicated employees across North America.


During your work term, we will push you to be your best by exposing you to challenging projects and giving you the opportunity to take ownership of your work term. You will gain practical experience, develop technical skills to complement your academic learning, and gain exposure to future opportunities at our company. To succeed, you’ll need to cultivate and communicate a clear vision and set goals for yourself, whilst also juggling individual country specific targets.


This position provides direct support for the North American division and aids collaboration across the organization through establishing consistent reporting practices and developing processes and procedures to drive continual performance improvement. This includes work in the areas of stewardship reporting, IT system support and maintenance, event reporting procedure support, benchmarking and HSE KPI data and process assurance.


Some of the key responsibilities of the Health, Safety & Environment Co-op Student will be:


  • Continuously improve standardized report contents and processes to align with changing requirements;
  • Supporting the compilation of Corporate consolidated weekly, monthly and quarterly HSE reports;
  • Supporting revisions as required to HSE IT system training materials;
  • Other duties as required.
  • Positioning benchmarking results received in context for CNOOC International’s North American division and relaying this information to key internal stakeholders;
  • Supporting data analysis and external scans to identify relevant trends;
  • Contributing information to the annual consolidated HSE Performance Report;
  • Supplying HSE data to external benchmarking studies;
  • Assisting the Communications Department in creating internal news stories that pertain to HSE and publication of stewardship reports;
  • QA/QC events and leading and lagging data for reports;
  • Acting as one of the HSE IT system administrators providing support, resources and additional coverage for Super Users;
  • Adapting the HSE IT systems as requirements change and communicating system changes to users and super users;

  • Previous health, safety, environment experience would be considered an asset;

  • Excellent data entry skills;
  • Ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal) and have strong command of the English language;
  • Strong obligation to accountability;

  • Work permit must be in place at time of application (if applicable);
  • Previous oil and gas experience would be considered an asset;
