The Greater Toronto Scout Foundation (GTSF) is a registered charity It operates under the model of a grant providing foundation governed by a Board of Directors who are comprised entirely of independent volunteers
GTSF is an Ontario non-share capital corporation. As such its directors must act honestly and in good faith with a view to the best interests of the corporation, and exercise reasonable care, diligence and skill in the conduct of their duties. It is independent of Scouts Canada.
GTSF provides grants, consistent with its objects and it charitable registration, to or for the benefit of Scouts Canada or Scouts groups-for purposes that support Scouts Canada’s mission: to “help develop well rounded youth, better prepared for success in the world”. Generally speaking, GTSF focuses its attention on Scouting within the GTA and surrounding areas.
The GTSF Board is a small, hands on board.
Term:
- Directors are elected for a 3 year term, which may be renewed for a second term
Duties:
- Comply with his/her obligations under the governing legislation and the GTSF charter and by-laws
- Bring “lived experience” and provide insight into decisions before the Board
- Promote the goals of the GTSF
- Attend monthly Board meetings
- Participate in at least two committees
- Investment Committee, Governance & Nominations Committee, Grants Committee and Scouting Engagement Committee
- Most committees meet monthly
- Maintain Board confidentiality
Qualifications and Skills
- Ability and willingness to think and act creatively and critically
- Positive attitude that will encourage collaboration and decision making
- Demonstrated leadership, management, problem solving and decision making skills
- Effective interpersonal and excellent communication skills
- Interest in providing opportunities for youth through Scouting
Life Experiences-any of these are beneficial but none are mandatory.
- Board experience with charities serving youth
- Active Section Scouters or parents of youth in Scouting
- Professional experience in law, financial management, accounting, not for profit, education or communications
- The GTSF seeks to ensure that the Directors reflect the diversity and demographics of scouting in GTA)
Time Commitment
- Approximately 4 to 6 hours a month (2 hours a week)
