CNIB invites you to build a career as unique as you! We are currently searching for an Apprentice, SmartLife Technology Programs! Guided by the direction of the SmartLife Head Coach Team and working from a primary base of a CNIB SmartLife Centre, the Apprentice, SmartLife Technology Programs, will work with both local and central SmartLife personnel. The Apprentice, SmartLife Technology Programs, will play a key role in changing the lives of Canadians who are blind or partially sighted by improving independence at home, work, and play. The Apprentice will provide assistance in empowering blind, partially sighted, and deafblind clients in learning about, and how to best use, their assistive technology through; logistical and hands-on support for SmartLife Connecting with Technology programs; program development, delivery and evaluation; client outreach and engagement; maintenance of client management systems; and through research, development and implementation of special projects that support organizational goals. The Apprentice, SmartLife Technology Programs, will also collaborate with other Apprentices across the country. This position requires a superior level of accuracy, confidentiality, sound judgment, and diplomacy.
Your impact at CNIB
  • Assist in developing and integrating creative programmatic strategies to engage SmartLife clients and customers, with existing and new SmartLife accessible programs and technologies.
  • Assist in the facilitation of in-person and virtual, one on one and group, interactive workshops to inform and instruct blind and partially sighted clients in the use of their iOS, Android, and Windows devices (including built-in accessibility features)
  • Assist clients and customers in navigating the SmartLife Centre and e-commerce webstore; recommend technology and devices that meet client needs; and facilitate purchase transactions through the Point of Sale system
  • Assist in informing and educating participants of the current accessible and assistive high-tech solutions through 1:1 and group, in-person, Tech@Home, virtual and digitally recorded demonstrations, and product testing groups.
  • Provide personalized and administrative support for CNIB SmartLife clients and customers through all associated programs, including Connecting with Technology, Phone it Forward, Tech Mate, Technology Subsidy, and Tech Fairs programs
Requirements
Who you are:
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills and portrays the appropriate professional image.
  • Experience with Salesforce an asset
  • Advanced computer skills, with proficiency in; iOS platforms, web applications, and MS Office software including Excel, Word Outlook, and Microsoft Office 365
  • Good interpersonal skills and enjoy teaching others, patient, friendly and empathetic.
  • Proven administrative, time management, and organization skills; amenable to changing priorities, deadlines, and procedures.
  • Professional attitude, reliable, results oriented, self-directed, and flexible.
  • Experience and aptitude with accessible and assistive hardware and software
  • Must be able to travel independently.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communications skills, customer services oriented.
  • Consistently exhibits a sensitive, mature, and responsible nature, as well as emotional and social professionalism.

  • Relevant training and experience in a related field
  • Personal or professional experience relating to blindness and sight loss is considered an asset.
  • Training specific to the position, including teaching basics, orientation to assistive technology, and training in built-in accessibility features such as Zoom, Narrator, and VoiceOver.
  • Personal and/or professional experience relating to blindness and vision loss.
  • Personal or professional experience working with assistive technology and/or accessible environments is considered an asset.
  • Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada.

  • This position has a primary base at CNIB SmartLife Centre Halifax along with some remote work opportunity.
