Our client, a North American industry leader in tunneling and specialists in the design and construction of underground structures, is seeking a Director, Construction to join their team. In this role you will be working on some of the most challenging and important underground infrastructure projects in North America. Their combination of high caliber skills, positive leadership and supportive personalities makes them a great career destination in tunnel design and construction and all facets of heavy civil engineering project management.


Leading a team of construction professionals in a senior management role and administer a major design build subcontract; with specific responsibility for the project's construction activity, you will provide a broad range of high quality and reliable construction expertise ensuring the safe delivery and highest quality standards to budget and program. You will be providing field execution leadership during the construction phase including the following:

  • Lead a constructability analysis
  • Review, negotiate and approve progress payments
  • Evaluate, negotiate, quantify and approve changes
  • Coordinate design and construction interfaces with other subcontractors
  • Coordinate subcontractor’s schedule with overall Project schedule and other subcontractor’s schedules
  • Prepare progress reports
  • Facilitate obtaining any required permits
  • Ensure compliance with the project requirements
  • Manage superintendents, labour force and subcontractors
  • Coordinate access requirements between overlapping subcontractors
  • Coordinate completion and handover process, including inspections, deficiency lists, handover documentation
  • Interface with the Client and third parties
  • Monitor and review subcontractor progress and works schedule and resolve any issues affecting the successful completion of the subcontract work
  • Planning and organizing the work and ordering materials
  • Monitor quality, safety and environmental performance
  • Coordinate requests for information and issue field instructions
  • Provide field execution leadership during various phases of the project


Qualifications & Experience:

  • Experience working on a target price delivery methods on contract of >$1B value
  • Combination of contractor side and owner side experience considered an asset
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in senior construction management roles either as a Contractor or an Owner’s Representative with five years of structures experience on projects >$1B and a minimum of three years of light rail transit experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma from a recognized university, college or technical institute in engineering, construction management, or comparable specialty
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting contract requirements, including contractor/client negotiations, and issuing clear written instructions
  • Experience in leading a large team of people and steering the project with prior experience working as a superintendent
  • Ability to analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems including inspecting equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and equipment involved in the construction of heavy civil / structural works
  • Knowledge of relevant safety regulations and requirements, and quality control processes
  • Heavy civil/infrastructure and tunneling experience considered a strong asset
