DESIGN MANAGER
The Design Manager is a key role that produces detailed automation project design work at JAE Automation.Reporting to the Senior Design Manager, this position requires strong project design skills in industrial automation systems to effectively plan, manage and deliver complex projects for our customers.This position requires deep technical skills to work with the Controls and Mechanical Team Leads to provide detailed custom automation designs and to effectively support the Senior Design Manager’s goals and objectives for the Design Team at JAE Automation.This role also involves strong interpersonal skills to work collaboratively and efficiently with customers, Project Managers, Automation Strategists and Design Team members.
This role is based in Kemptville, ON south of Ottawa.Relocation assistance is available.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
1)Project Design Management
•Attend customer design meetings to gather project specifications and other relevant information
•Respond to customer inquiries regarding project design issues/concerns to resolve issues quickly and to promote
clear communication
•Creates and develops design concepts and detailed plans
•Review and approve project Bill of Materials for procurement
•Review and approval of documentation, instructions, drawings, programming, or specifications to communicate
design intent
•Responsible for overall design on projects, reviewing design changes and leading teams to ensure processes and
projects are being completed accurately and timely
•Supports and collaborates with the Automation Strategist in the development of requirements and solutions for
customers
•Works closely with the Project Managers for scheduling, assigning team members, meeting project goals, and
staying on budget
•Works closely with the Controls and Mechanical Team Leads to resolve technical design issues
•Mentors members of the Design Team in technical skill areas to foster internal skills development
•Review and approve the setup of specialized and standard equipment to test, diagnose and analyze the
performance of components, assemblies, and systems
2)Sales and Senior Level Management Support
•Collaborates with the Senior Design Manager to receive new projects, report on existing project designs and close
out projects
•Provides technical support for sales efforts including review of estimates, proposals, or presentations
•Conducts research and development activities to support sales efforts
•Researches and investigates new suppliers and maintains other strategic supply partnerships to support senior
level management sales efforts as required
•Meets weekly with the Senior Design Manager to review progress on design project work and other
issues/concerns
•Provides feedback to the Senior Design Manager on the performance of Design Team members to assist in the
quarterly performance review process
REQUIRED WORK EXPERIENCE/ABILITIES
•10 to 15 years of relevant work experience including a focus in industrial automation, project design management,
robotics, controls, and mechanical design is required
•Exceptional technical writing skills to contribute to proposals, estimates, technical documentation and record
strong design specifications and processes
•Exceptional custom automation design skills in all technical areas including controls, mechanical, and robotics
•Excellent document management system abilities and demonstrates standards for excellence in project design
REQUIRED TECHNICAL SKILLS
•Expert in industrial automation systems using 2D and 3D CAD tools.
•Expert level project design management, controls, mechanical design, and robotics.
•Expert level project design abilities and problem-solving skills.
•Expert level skills with MS Office products
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
•College diploma, university degree or 15+ years of relevant work experience in project design management and industrial automation systems or a combination of relevant technical skills demonstrated and/or acquired work experience.

Additional Information
•Flexible work hours may be required.
•Travel may be required and on occasion to other parts of North America including entry into the USA.
