Position Overview


Working as a member of the Medical Transcription team under the leadership of the Manager or designate of the Regional Transcription Services, the incumbent is responsible for coordinating and participating in the efficient and effective provision of the Medical Transcriptions activities. Coordinator duties include, but are not limited to, delegation of work, performance standards for support staff, ensuring essential functions are achieved within established timeframes/standards and recommending and implementing process improvements. Maintaining or updating staff schedules in ESP. Medical Transcriptionist duties include completion of the medical record by transcribing medical dictation from clinical providers.

Experience


The following experience is required:


  • Working with voice recognition software.
  • Must have an aptitude for understanding dictation by individuals for whom English is a second language, e.g. dictation with strong accents, rapid speech, unusual phraseology.
  • Previous experience must include exceeding the minimum of 85 minutes of dictation while maintaining a high-quality document.
  • Three years experience in an automated transcription environment required.
  • Ability to work with confidential personal health information and understand and apply key principles of privacy legislation as stated in regional policies.
  • Experience transcribing medical dictation in a production environment without reference to hard copy source documents (i.e. health record).
  • Working knowledge of Electronic Patient Record
  • Experience directing support staff.


Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)


  • Complete high school education, Manitoba standards required.
  • Successful completion of a recognized medical transcriptionist training program required.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered.


Qualifications And Skills
  • Working knowledge of transcription systems, printer and fax technology.
  • Excellent command of the English language (oral and written) including superior spelling, grammar and punctuation skills.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Word.
  • Proficiency with email systems for departmental communications.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • The following special training is required and competency levels will be demonstrated through skill tests:
  • The following is required:
  • Proficiency working in an electronic environment which may include shared folders, remote servers, multiple systems open a one time as well as multiple screens.
  • Typing/keyboarding skills of 70-80 words per minute.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of medical terminology including anatomy, physiology, disease processes, pharmacology, laboratory values, signs and symptoms.


Physical Requirements


  • Long periods of sitting.
  • Periods of prolonged use of computer monitor, keyboard and ear phones.


This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
