Coding Team Project Support

BACKGROUND and CONTEXT (you really probably should read)

building-U is a non-profit , volunteer based organization that works entirely remotely with small teams of high school students (from Canada, the US, and other countries around the world). Each of these teams is set up to produce specific things (resources) that reach, resonate with, and inform high school students. These resources include: our curated, user-friendly, and free database of internships, funding challenges, and education programs; our annual virtual networking and scholarship game ($4YT); as well as other types of resources that we put together to be useful for high school students. All of the teams work on projects using a peer-to-peer/ self-directed learning model, and focus on practically addressing business challenges that we face at building-U.

The Coding Team is one of those teams. In addition to high school students, we have several young professional developers who volunteer time they would like in different capacities. High School students on the Coding Team learn about web and database development through exposure and foundational work in the following languages and syntaxes: HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, and continue intro more project focused learning in React, MVC architecture, Node JS, Mongo DB. After developing some foundational skills in these relevant areas in, interns can elect to move into smaller teams (pairs) to apply them appropriately to small and specific front end and back end pages and integrations within the larger contexts of a migration and redesign of the building-U website from Wordpress to React/ Node JS/ Mongo DB. In addition to the new website we are also in the midst of upgrading our annual virtual scholarship and networking event... $4YT ( which operates in Laravel and React).

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

Super responsive and reliable mid-level or seasoned developers (or extremely game newbies) to work on a project in any one of the following areas:

REACT/ NODE JS/ MONGO: Supporting high school student teams jointly working on a new website page, by reviewing code/ giving feedback/ offering insights/ participating in a weekly student update session. Possibly having involvement with producing a learning session and challenge in one of the above mentioned areas, should that be of interest)

OR

PHP/LARAVEL OR REACT : helping complete our redesigned annual virtual game/event ($4YT)

• This primarily involves backend support for database adjustments and API integration

WORDPRESS : changes, fixes, and new integrations to our current Wordpress website

THINGS THAT COULD INDICATE GOOD FIT for this

VOLUNTEER SUPPORT ROLE:

• Communicating consistently and effectively for status updates and feedback
• Using team tools like GitHub and Trello
• Taking initiative and remaining calm...sharing ideas, creative problem solving, straight forward communicatrion, and utilizing the strengths of the team
• Commiting a maximum of 5 hours/week
• Having a lot of autonomy and independence while maintaining accountability for collaborating with others and integrating with team goals
• Coordinating with others to plan, develop, and improve strategies that can align with project priorities
• Being a team player, comfortable with open lines of communication on all projects
• Exhibiting a good sense of humour and exercising excellent time management skills
• Assessing and delivering on reasonable personally created project timelines.
