Clinical Extern – Intensive Care Unit

Rate of pay $19.80/hour


Contract End Date  March 31, 2024


Shift 12 Hour Shifts – Days, Nights, Weekends (0700-1900 or 1900-0700)


Summary


Clinical Externs can be clinical learners in any of the following health professional programs nursing (BScN, PN, IEN), paramedic, or medicine (please see alternative clinical extern postings specific to clinical learners in respiratory therapy and physiotherapy/occupational therapy programs). Externs are unregulated health care providers and will work as part of an interprofessional team under supervision of regulated health care providers. This is a paid position as part of the Ontario Government's Enhanced Extern Program (EEP). 


Qualifications
  • Paramedic students in second year of an approved Paramedic program
  • IENs who have initiated registration with the CNO and have received a CNO letter of direction
  • Undergraduate medical students in their final year of a program of medical education leading to the MD degree that has been accredited by6 the CACMS
  • Successful completion of a recent clinical placement in an acute care area preferred
  • Demonstrated evidence of excellent academic standing
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills
  • Recent graduates from a program of medical education leading to the MD degree that has been accredited by the CACMS and who are awaiting the stat of an accredited residency program
  • Demonstrated knowledge of infection prevention and control practices
  • Nursing Students in any year of study and enrolled in a CNO approved baccalaureate or diploma nursing program
  • Enrolled in a health professional program such as
  • Excellent clinical skills and competencies
  • Current certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support required
  • Good attendance record


Duties


  • Works with unit nurses to ensure that they have the knowledge, skills and judgment needed to perform all actions/duties
  • Demonstrates excellent problem-solving, decision making and critical thinking skills
  • Provides assistance with lifting, turning, transferring, transporting, and ambulating as per the hospital policy
  • Participates as an effective member of an interprofessional team
  • Assists with comfort measures and patient safety by ensuring the environment is clean and tidy and free of hazards
  • Practices under the direct and/or indirect supervision of the regulated healthcare professional assigned to them on the unit
  • Demonstrates excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Practices in a manner consistent with organizational policies, professional standards, while taking into account CNO guidance for unregulated care providers
  • Provides measures to ensure skin integrity and reduce pressure injuries
  • Requests assistance with assigned duties whenever in need
