The Position
Reporting to the Director of Generation and working closely with the Vice President of Government Relations, the Climate Change and Environmental Policy Officer will support the management of association committees and work with members and association staff on files related to climate change, the environment and net zero.
The ideal candidate will have experience working with government and industry stakeholders in a membership driven organization. They will be an excellent written and oral communicator with the ability to articulate complex ideas to a variety of audiences. They will have experience using data and research to develop comprehensive policy positions. They will be able to build and maintain productive relationships with members and stakeholders. They must be organized, able to work independently and as part of a team and be capable of managing multiple competing projects and tasks.
Based in Ottawa, Ontario, this is a full-time, permanent position requiring 1-2 years of relevant work experience in government, industry, or the non-governmental sector. Candidates must be able to work out of the Electricity Canada office at least two days a week.
Key Responsibilities
Policy and Communications Support
• Review and analyze documents and produce brief summaries for member distribution.
• Provide research support as needed.
• Support the preparation of submissions, presentations, speaking and other documents for external communications.
• Proactively monitor and analyze policy developments and emerging issues.
• Maintain up to date knowledge of existing and proposed legislation, regulations, policies and proposals pertaining to assigned files.
Meeting Coordination
• Schedule meetings with members, stakeholders, and government officials.
• Plan and organize committee meetings, conference calls, webinars and other events.
• Prepare meeting materials.
• Draft meeting minutes.
• Manage committee membership lists.
Member and Administrative Services
• Monitor email correspondence and provide timely responses to members and stakeholders.
• Review invoices, enter budget codes, ensure approval by appropriate staff and submit to accounting for payment.
• Other administrative duties as assigned.
Qualifications
• A Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies or Engineering.
• Minimum 1-2 years experience working in government, industry, non-governmental or trade association.
• Strong understanding of Canada’s political and policy landscape and demonstrated experience in legislative, regulatory and/or policy development and analysis.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the Canadian energy or environmental sector is a strong asset.
• Ability to understand and communicate complex information to a wide variety of audiences.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Organized and detail-oriented.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks with competing deadlines.
• No restrictions on lobbying under The Lobbying Act.
• French/English bilingualism is considered a strong asset.
