About the role
This position of the Casualty Claims Analyst (Level IV) is responsible for handling various types of mainstream commercial casualty claims including slip and falls, product liability, and other general liability claims and must operate in accordance with all operational/Best Practices guidelines. This would include determining coverage, drafting reservation of rights and denial letters, attendance at mediation/settlement conferences, and instructing independent adjusters and attorneys in the negotiation and settlement of claims. Claims are primarily in Canadian venues, with limited worldwide exposure.
This position will be based in Toronto, Ontario.
What you need to know:
- Prepare disclaimer and/or reservation of rights letters and communication same to underwriters, brokers and insureds when applicable
- Issue payments within appropriate time frame
- Provide direction to adjusters on investigation of claims
- Negotiate settlements directly where possible
- Inform management of all complaints, large losses, coverage issues, etc.
- Review complex casualty claims in conjunction with policy wordings to determine coverage
- Ensure compliance by legal counsel of our litigation guidelines
- Operate within our best practices guidelines, including timely reserve review, notes, payment requests, electronic diary
- Participate in mediation/ADR process to bring about resolution of claim
- Provide instruction to legal counsel to bring about appropriate resolution of claim
What we are looking for:
- Minimum of 7 years handling complex commercial casualty claims, including umbrella and excess
- Must work independently and demonstrate the ability to exercise sound judgment.
- Ability to manage workload effectively and efficiently/ability to prioritize is essential
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and negotiation skills
- Travel: Approximately 15% to attend mediations/ADR.
- Proficient computer skills to navigate the paperless claim file system
- Solid communication skills, both verbal and written
- College/University or equivalent industry experience
- Experience in managing litigation files and ability to make decisions and give directions to counsel and/or adjusters
