Objective

As a critical thinker that has strategic instincts in your area of expertise, your commitment will focus on helping build a robust and sustainable national non-profit that is revolutionizing the way finance and operations are managed across the social purpose sector. Purpose Forward is a grassroots non-profit that was established in 2021 with a mission of scaling operational expertise across the Canadian charitable sector through ongoing operational support, consulting services, and training that is tailored to our unique needs and challenges. With a team of three staff members, we serve clients in BC, Alberta, and Ontario while experiencing rapid growth. Purpose Forward operates fully remotely, with all business conducted virtually.

Our Board of Directors is currently comprised of 7 individuals. There are 5 standing Committees: Executive, Finance & Audit, Governance & Risk, Development & Client Experience, and Personnel. Each committee meets 3-6 times per year, typically evenings or weekends depending on the preferences of the committee members. As a new organization, our Board focuses on governance, with much work to be done in this area.

Duties and Responsibilities

Directors are expected to attend most Board meetings and participate in at least one committee or working group. Additional activities between meetings can be completed at your own convenience. The core duties of a Director include:

• Seeking clarification or additional information when needed
• Avoiding potential conflicts of interest
• Actively contributing skills and knowledge in meetings and committee work
• Attending meetings regularly
• Maintaining confidentiality
• Monitoring the organization's financial affairs
• Ensuring compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements
• Demonstrating commitment to the organization's mission and programs
• Staying informed about issues and trends affecting the organization
• Preparing for meetings by reviewing agendas, minutes, reports, and other relevant documentation

Qualifications and Requirements

The ideal candidates should possess good judgment, critical thinking skills, a collaborative attitude, and effective communication abilities. Directors are expected to commit to a 2-year term with the option to seek nomination for a second, 2-year term.

Preference will be given to candidates with specialized knowledge in at least one of the following areas:

• Marketing and/or fundraising
• Employment, contract, and/or data privacy law
• Information technology and cybersecurity
• Senior leadership experience in the grassroots non-profit sector
• Non-profit board governance
• Quality improvement, assurance, and/or research
• Communications
