Job Description
Assistant Director of Engineering and Public Works

The Town of New Glasgow is a charming riverside community nestled in Northern Nova Scotia.

With nearly 9,500 residents calling this town their home and acting as the commercial-service hub for the larger region of Pictou County and Northern Nova Scotia, which boasts a population of approximately 43,000, this is an incredible opportunity to make a meaningful impact.

On their behalf, we are seeking an exceptional engineer and leader to join the Town as their Assistant Director of Engineering and Public Works. In this role, you will lead the New Glasgow Public Works team, ensuring seamless operations, effective planning, and unwavering commitment to our level of service parameters.

Reporting to the Director of Engineering and Public Works, you will oversee the Transportation, Environmental Services, and Mechanical (Fleet) divisions, serving as the key interface for all public works services. Your responsibilities will encompass performance management, hiring and training, people management, project planning, and budget maintenance. Additionally, you will play a crucial role in asset management, climate action, and compliance with the Nova Scotia Accessibility Act.

What qualities do we seek in the ideal candidate?

To thrive in this position, you hold a degree in civil engineering (P.Eng. designation preferred) or a relevant engineering discipline, such as CET. Your practical engineering and construction experience, coupled with your direct responsibility for the design and construction of municipal public works assets, will set you apart as a highly qualified candidate. Your significant supervisory experience has equipped you with the necessary skills to effectively lead a team of approximately 40 unionized employees and supervisory staff.

As an accomplished engineer, you possess exceptional time management and project management skills. Your understanding of engineering design principles, civil and municipal standards, and best practices will guide you in delivering excellence in every aspect of your work. Proficiency in public works infrastructure design and maintenance, codes and regulations, GIS, CAD, and surveying is essential for success in this role.

Your strong presentation and customer service skills, combined with excellent verbal and written communication abilities, will be crucial in building strong relationships with all stakeholders, including staff, the public, contractors, and consultants.

Demonstrated competency in vehicle and equipment maintenance is considered a definite asset, further enhancing your ability to excel in this position.
