Overview Construction Carpenters are skilled tradespeople who build, install, and repair structures made of wood, steel, and other materials. They work on residential, commercial, and industrial construction projects, and are responsible for reading blueprints, measuring and cutting materials, and assembling structures. Detailed Job Description Construction Carpenters are responsible for reading and interpreting blueprints and other technical drawings to determine the size and shape of structures. They measure and cut materials, such as lumber and steel, to the correct size and shape, and assemble them into structures. They also install doors, windows, and other fixtures, and may be required to finish surfaces with paint, varnish, or other materials. Construction Carpenters may also be responsible for repairing and maintaining existing structures. Job Skill Requirements Construction Carpenters must have a good understanding of mathematics, as well as the ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings. They must also have excellent manual dexterity and physical strength, as they will be required to lift and carry heavy materials. Construction Carpenters must also have good problem-solving skills, as they may be required to come up with creative solutions to construction problems. Job Qualifications Most employers require Construction Carpenters to have a high school diploma or equivalent. Some employers may also require Construction Carpenters to have a certificate or degree from a trade school or apprenticeship program. Job Knowledge Construction Carpenters must have a good understanding of construction materials, tools, and techniques. They must also have a good understanding of building codes and safety regulations. Job Experience Most employers require Construction Carpenters to have at least two years of experience in the field. Some employers may also require Construction Carpenters to have experience with specific types of projects, such as residential or commercial construction.
